1. For question 1, answer either 1a) or 1b).

a) A pair of bevel gear (straight teeth, shaft axes at 90⁰) is to be employed to transmit (𝟒 + 𝟏𝟎)
kW of power from the driving shaft (rotating at 600 rpm) to the driven shaft (rotating at 200
rpm). The pinion has 30 teeth. The gears are made of cast steel (ultimate strength = 600
MPa). The tooth profile is 20⁰ involute full depth. The face width is one-third (1/3) of the
pitch cone distance. Estimate the module of the gears considering the beam strength. For
the sake of simplicity, the dynamic loading may be unaccounted for. Consider a factor of
safety of 3. No checking is required for dynamic load and wear load. Please see the
note below on page 3. [12]
OR

b) In the planetary spur gear train shown below (Figure Q2), the annular gear (A) is fixed, and
the arm (a) rotates at 30 rpm, clockwise. The number of teeth in the planet (P) and annular
gear are 30 and 135, respectively. Find the speed of the planet gear and the sun gear (S)
with direction. If a torque of 400 N-m (counter-clockwise) is required to hold the annual
gear, find the torque applied at the arm. [12]

2. A parallel axis gear drive consists of 80 teeth gear driven by a 20 teeth helical pinion having 20⁰
normal pressure angle (∅𝑛 ), 25⁰ helix angle (Ψ), and a normal module (𝑚𝑛 ) of 4 mm. The pinion

rotates at (𝟕𝟐𝟎 + 𝒙𝒙) rpm. The minimum recommended face width is given by , but

you may choose it wisely. The pinion and the gear are made of steel with an ultimate strength of
600 MPa and heat-treated to a surface hardness of 300 BHN. The gear drive is operating under a
steady load for 8 hours/day (service factor =1). Consider a factor of safety (for both bending and
wear) of 2. Assuming that the velocity factor accounts for the dynamic load, calculate the power
transmitting capacity of the gear drive. Please see the note below on page 3. [14]

3. A trainee engineer has suggested using a pair of ball bearings for a particular application. Force
analysis of the said application indicated that one particular bearing is subjected to a radial load
of 8000 N and a thurst load of 4575 N. The basic dynamic load capacity of the suggested bearing
is 12100 N, whereas the static load capacity is 9150 N. The inner race of the bearing rotates with
the shaft. The application desires a bearing life of 50,000,000 revolutions at 90% reliability.
Considering the radial and thrust load factors (X and Y) as 0.56 and 1.0, respectively, check if the
suggested bearing will satisfy the requirement or not. [4]

4. For question 4, answer either 4a) or 4b).

a) What is composite/concentric spring? When two concentric coil springs made of same
material, having same length and compressed equally by axial load. Show that the load
shared by the two springs will be directly proportional to the square of the diameters of the
wires of the two springs. [3+5]

b) It is required to design a square key for fixing a pulley on the shaft which is 50 mm in
diameter. A 10 kW power at 2𝑥𝑥 rpm is transmitted by the pulley to the shaft. The key is
made of steel 45C8 (Syt = Syc = 380 N/mm2) and the factor of safety is 3. Determine the
dimensions of the key. [8]

5. A solid circular shaft, is subjected to torsional shear stress, which varies from 0 to 𝒙𝒙 N/ mm2
and, at the same time, is subjected to an axial stress that varies from -15 to +30 N/mm2. The
frequency of variation of these stresses is equal to shaft speed. The shaft is made of steel FeE
400 (Sut = 540, Syt = 400 N/mm2) and the corrected endurance strength of shaft is 200 N/mm2.
Determine the diameter of the shaft using a factor of safety 3. [12]

No derivation of the formulae is required. Assume any data with justification, if needed but not
provided with the questions. Some equations are provided below if you need them. The symbols
in the equations have their usual meaning.
