1.0 INTRODUCTION

In 2015, there are international conferences have been held by UN. Practically, UN Federation
has focused on leading the member’s country as developing country. They come up with 17 SDGs
goals that combining all factors that could help the country to become a better one as those factors
are the main impact that effect the country reputation and harmony between their citizens. Since
UN Federation has announce 17 SDGs, Malaysia as a member of UN has built a strategic planning
which relate to 17 SDGs heading to 2030. There is a big planning for each goal that Malaysia has
plan to achieve it. Every sector of government agencies has to contribute to realize all the goals
for Malaysia.

Based on the goals that has set by the UN, we will build a great nation if all the sustainable
development goals (SDG) were achieved. So, Malaysia government and us has to work together
and be united towards Malaysia better country as it just not helping the name of Malaysia, it also
helps the community’s life. For example, sustainable transport could help the communities to get
a job as the supply chain has always moving every day. As for the country sustainable transport
could help the country to achieve economic of growth and our currency level will be higher
compared to before.

1
2.0 FIVE (5) ROLES OF MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT IN ACHIEVING SDGS

There are 17 SDGs which was set by UN to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.
Those SDGs has to be achieved by 2030 as it can lead the country to be a better one, I would like
to choose industry, innovation and infrastructure goals as it is the 9th goals of SDGs. It is
because these goals are the most achieving goal that can be found in Malaysia and it has shown a
variety of development that has been implement by Malaysian government.

There are 5 roles of Malaysian government in achieving industry, innovation and infrastructure
which related to transport. The first roles of Malaysian government that relate to sustainable cities
was development of infrastructure. Malaysian government has implemented a variety of
infrastructure that helps users to arrive to their destination easily. As we can see for rail
transportation, Malaysian government has introduced The MRT Putrajaya Line as the second line
of the MRT Project, which expands the current MRT line to provide commuters with improved
access to public transportation. It was a convenient access for commuter’s users to shift from the
MRT Putrajaya Line to current rail lines. A total of 1,200 passengers can travel on the line's, newest
train set's four carriages in each direction. The trains will run every 4 minutes during peak hours
and 6 minutes (off peak hours). Based on the example that I’ve given, it can show us that
accessibility can be increased and economic growth can be boosted via sustainable transportation.
Better economic integration is achieved through sustainable transportation while maintaining
environmental sensitivity that will create social fairness, links between urban and rural
communities.

Besides that, Malaysia government has also implemented growth in road network since 2010.
Road network Total length of federal & state roads has been merged to improve connectivity
nationwide since 2015. Road network has help road users to travel from origin to destination such
as the newest federal road that has been introduce by the government which is SUKE Highway.
The expressway will run on top of the existing Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2)
between Sungai Besi and Ulu Klang, where the actual objective is to reducing traffic along the
road. As I am the user of MRR2, SUKE Highway has been positively impact towards traffic
jammed especially during peak hours. Nowadays the frequency of car using MRR2 is lower
compared to the situation where SUKE Highway doesn’t been built yet. There are some research

2
where the chairman of the Taman Dagang Jaya resident’s association claimed that it might take up
to 45 minutes to travel to Kuala Lumpur via the MRR2 because of the area's persistent traffic
congestion throughout the previous seven years that he has resided there. Even at busy hours, he
said that the trip would only take 10 to 15 minutes with SUKE Highway. This highway will be
very beneficial, especially for individuals who need to travel frequently or daily to their
workplaces. It also offers users more choices either to use SUKE or MRR2 highway. Users can
take the old road if they are not rushing. In addition, there are collective data where more than
170,000 users per day are currently using the new route where it could benefit them, as they can
shorten the time taken to arrive to their destination and they could reduce quantity of fuel as the
journey are not too far compared to MRR2 according to SUKE deputy general manager Zarulazam
Eusofe.

Moreover, Malaysian government has also played an important role in developing innovation
through the communities. I have claimed this statement because there are a lot of innovation has
been throughout year by year from Malaysian government. These roles have had a powerful impact
towards Malaysian country as it helps communities and higher authorities to access data faster and
easy. For example, Malaysian government has come up with an idea with MCMC (Malaysian
Communications and Multimedia Commission) about PULSE application. PULSE is a mobile
application which were created to help users to easily plan their trips using the routes and networks
of MRT, LRT, KL Monorail, Sunway BRT, buses operated by Rapid Penang, Rapid Kuantan, and
Rapid KL, as well as MRT feeder buses, where they are all currently covered by the app. This
application has encouraged people to use the apps which was correlate with transport because they
can know either the bus or train will arrive or not. Automatically, it can help users of public
transport reduce their time taken to wait for the bus or train. It also can reduce congestion between
passengers as they can track the bus schedule. Students in UITM Puncak Alam are also using
PULSE applications because they want to track bus movement and schedule so that they can use
public transport easily. They tend to use that app because the only way they want to move around
in Shah Alam area or campus area are just by bus or grab, which grab are more expensive compared
to rapid kl.

Furthermore, Malaysia is now unlocking productivity in the country. The government has
introduced it to enhancing productivity through adoption of new technology, automation and

3
cyber-physical systems to gear up for Industrial Revolution 4.0 (4IR). 4IR consist of Emerging
technologies such as automation, robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), machine to machine (M2M)
and the internet of things (IoT). This system has been the main support to unlock productivity and
create economic of growth for Malaysia. It is because, that is how world operates due to the
changes of era especially during global fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. As an example, we
can see that in Figure 1 there is a collective data based on Malaysia Annual Economic Growth rate
and GNI Per Capita from 1970 until 2014, this data has shown us that the graph of the annual and
nominal GNI has increasing because the government has unlock productivity in the country by
increasing export and import activities. Among the applications that has been use during Covid-
19 was Shopee online apps which categorize as IoT. These apps help user to bought a products or
services through online transactions which transport has also contribute in the process of moving
customer’s product. For example, customers have purchased a book where it’s origin in China, so
transportation is the main process to deliver the goods from China to Malaysia. As we can see in
the figure 2, Malaysia government has mark transportation and logistics as a main key sector which
was align with UN SDGs in achieving the goals.

Figure 1

4
Figure 2
Last but not least, Malaysia government has adopting sustainable consumption and
production practices in industries. Green growth is one of the practices that government
introduce because green growth could prevent pollution to the nature as it helps the industries in
Malaysia to operate based on eco-friendly where it can reduce climate change happen. The
government has developed National Transport Policy which were related to sustainable
consumption such as green logistics process to transporting the goods. For example, in supply
chain we do have cross-docking shipment where the vehicle combines all shipment in once. This
process could decrease the number of kilometers traveled by the vehicle which could reduce air
pollution happen. Cross-docking shipment also decrease the number of vehicles that have to depart
from origin to final destination, in this way the industry has develop green growth practices to help
the country achieve SDGs goals.

5
CONCLUSIONS

In a nutshell , Malaysia government initiative in combining those three factors as one goal could
lead to a better country which align with 9th goals of SDGs. Malaysia government has implement
this strategies since they are currently leading to accomplish 17th SDGs goal which introduce by
UN. Heading to the year of 2030, Malaysia will be a country who has a lot of improvement
compared to the other countries because it has successfully achieved SDGs current target. By
introducing more infrastructure development , industry development among communities and
innovation , I am sure that Malaysia will categorize as “developing country” as the government
always improve their services and strategic plan based on 17 SDGs goals.
