Learners of Balutu
Elementary School “ aims to help our learners from Grade 3 to develop their love
and habit for reading with the partnership of their parents and teachers
2. Narrative Report
As per the School Learning Recovery Plan (LRP), one of the gaps that need
immediate intervention is the reading skills of the learners. Even before the pandemic,
nearly frustrations and non-reader were identified however due to COVID-19, the number
of nearly and frustration and non- readers increased. Literacy assessments among Grade
three learners were administered and the results conveyed that learners have a lot to catch
up with regards to literacy.
Project MICHELLE is a learning intervention that will address the gaps in
literacy specifically in reading skills with comprehension among learners. Aside from the
least learned competencies result, MPL also shows low reading and comprehension skills
among Grade 3 learners, for the second quarter, MPL was 74.36%. The proponent also
observed that learners have difficulty answering questions that involved higher order
thinking skills. Factors that causes this were laziness to read long passages, difficulty in
analyzing the question and lack of pupils’ interest in reading.
With these, after the approval of the proposal, the proponent utilized the pretest
to determine the literacy skills of the grade 3 learners. Test results revealed that out of 33
pupils, 30 were at Filipino Reading Proficiency Level 1. Three of them were at Level 2. The
MPL was 23.07%. It only shows that interventions to bridge the learning gap in Reading
Skills were deemed necessary.
The proponent prepared short stories, passages and poems that were stored in a
“Reading Box”. These served as their daily drill. Learners were given time to read and
answer the questions and checked if their answers were correct. Every learner has a
portfolio where they answer the reading question to monitor their progress. This strategy
developed their Reading skills in solving problems and improved their proficiency level.
Level 3. Though there is still one remaining learner that were not able to achieve Level 3,
the proponent has seen progress in their proficiency level.
