III. LESSON OVERVIEW

The administration of tests is not a simple task. There are points to be considered, there are
conditions to be prepared for, and there is a need to be cautious so that the validity and reliability of
tests would not be sacrificed.

In this lesson, the students are expected to appreciate the ideal manner of administering tests,
internalize it, assess their current practices, and commit themselves to becoming ‘matitinong teachers.’

IV. DESIRED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Based on current practices, the students must be able to:


1. identify positive and negative practices in test administration; and
2. recommend solutions to improve practices on test administration.

V. LESSON CONTENT

ADMINISTRATION OF TEST

Procedures for Test Administration differ according to:


1. subject area
2. grade level
3. type of instrument

Procedures for Test Administration

1) Preparation of the test


- schedule for a definite time and place.
- interruptions should be anticipated and avoided.
- all materials necessary for the test administration must be on hand, e.g. samples of booklets,
answer sheets, other testing materials, extra booklets, pencils, stopwatch, and a copy of the
examiner’s direction

2) Setting the physical scene


- seated in alternate chairs/desks or widely spaced tables that are free of books and papers.
- consecutive rows of students are given different parts of the test.
- arrangement of chairs depends on the size and shape of the room.
- sound system must be installed.
- blackboard, eraser, and chalk must be prepared.
- front seat should be filled ahead of the rest.

3) Orientation of the pupils


- establish rapport to prepare the examinees’ mental state.
- help ease out tension.
- examiner must be firm but at the same time friendly.

4) Distribution of test materials


- save time
- every examinee must be supplied with all the materials.

5) Giving preliminary oral directions


- show a copy of the test booklet to the pupils:
• “Keep it clean – answers are to be written on the answer sheet.”
• “Open only when you are told to do so.”

6) Answering questions
- answer when questions arise.
- questions on the direction are not entertained in higher years.

7) Timing of test
- exams should start at the same time.
- write: the exact time the test proper begins, and when to end.
- have examinees stop promptly.

8) Proctoring the test


- examiner should stand at strategic places.
- circulate around to see if students are doing what is right.
- guard against cheating.
- be sensitive to the needs of the examinees.

9) Giving oral direction during and at the end of the test


- announce: working time remaining.
end of a test part.
start of a new test part.

10) Handling special situations


- have a plan regarding interruptions:
leaving the room; minor illness; some emergencies; extreme necessities.
- no case should more than one examinee be allowed to go out of the room at the same time.
- questions are not relayed to those who will take the test in the next shift.
- irregularities: - cheating and misconduct should be anticipated.
- give a warning or assign the examinee to another seat.
- if actual cheating, should submit all and prevent from continuing.

11) Collecting the test materials


- procedure.
- booklets and answer sheets must be collected quickly.
- count the booklets and other test materials.

12) Accounting for test materials


- make a quick and accurate accounting of the test materials before the examinees are
dismissed.
- sort them out; the number of materials should tally with the number of examinees.
- see whether there are any pages torn off.

VI. LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Question and Answer for interaction before the lesson. Q & A would be posted in the LMS used
or would be conducted during in-person meetings.

Group Activity: Based on your experiences, give your reflections on the positive/negative
experiences of test administration and provide recommendations (finished under Activity 3).

VII. EVALUATION

Classroom Participation and/or Quiz

Portfolio/Project Entry. A major output is required of the students, the content of which starts from
formulation of instructional objectives to making of TOS and test, then administration and item analysis,
scoring, and application of the statistical tools, to the computation of grades.

The test constructed by the students will be submitted for the teacher’s input/editing. After
returning to the students, they will revise/improve the test, if needed, and administer it to 30 ‘students’.
