Reading material : The Roots of Gender Inequality in Developing Countries (Jayachandran, 2015)
Directions : Choose three (3) important meaningful phrases from the reading material.
Find 2 to 3 photos, pieces of clip art, or other artwork that best represent each idea/phrase. Put the
images in the boxes provided. Then write a short paragraph explaining the relationship of the visual
to the chosen phrase.

PHRASE 1
“Poor countries by no means have a monopoly on gender inequality.”
Page number: 64

Explanation
The pictures above support the idea that there is indeed a large gender gap between men
and women – disparities in terms of employment, where men earn more than women and worst-
case scenarios, women are not allowed/ seen as incapable of getting a job. In terms of health, boys
and men are top priority in healthcare that caused decrease of mortality of women in certain
countries. Same goes with education, power, freedom of choice and life satisfaction where research
shows that women from poor countries are more likely to be deprived of these things.
PHRASE 2
“Raising a daughter is like watering your neighbor’s garden.”
Page number: 75

Explanation
Both pictures illustrate patrilocality. In the first picture, capturing a wedding in Tokyo, Japan,
the practice of patrilocal residence is evident, signifying that upon marriage, the bride physically and
financially leaves her household. This may contribute to fathers being less inclined to invest in their
daughters. The second picture depicts the Tiv people and their patrilineal system, where names and
properties are passed down through male descendants. Although residence and descent alone may
not strongly predict the status of women, they do play a role. Patrilocality and Patrilineal emerges as
a contributing factor to gender gaps, as it tend to portray women and girls as less valuable within
certain societal frameworks.
PHRASE 3
“……. the problem of gender inequality resolves itself via economic growth.”
Page number: 83

Explanation
The world is healing. The positive steps are being taken, exemplified by the UN Women has
given the national 2022 Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) Awards to eight companies in
China for promoting gender equality and empowering women employees (first picture). The
International Summits on Women and Gender Equality held in September 2015. This significant
gathering, featuring the participation of President Xi Jinping and 85 representatives from around the
world, was organized by UN Women and the People's Democratic Republic of China (second picture).
It was part of the broader United Nations Summit for adopting the post-2015 development agenda,
aiming to secure commitments from global leaders to accelerate the implementation of the Beijing
Declaration and Platform for Action (1995) and achieve gender equality by 2030. If there is one thing
that could cure gender inequality, it is economic growth and globalization. Its impacts remain
uncertain, but we must take the risks to overcome the persistent challenges of gender inequality.
