A. Read part of an email from Julie to a friend, Emily. Choose the best word or phrase, A, B, C or D, for
each numbered space.
Hi Emily,
How are things? Sorry I haven’t written for a while. I’m doing a project on ecological systems. The teacher
gave us a week to research and write it, but I put (25) off doing the research for nearly a week, and now I
have to finish everything this weekend!
You’re probably thinking, ‘Why didn’t you do the research immediately?’ Well, we can’t use the internet for
this project. We have to get everything from books. But I couldn’t go to the library last week to start work,
because we had a (26) heatwave and the air-conditioning stopped working there, so it was impossible to be in
the building!
Anyway, the weather is better now, so I’m ready to start, but first, I have to choose an ecosystem. I could
write about a (27) jungle with monkeys and parrots and snakes and so on, or the Arctic and the problems for
polar bears, or maybe a water system of some sort. Which ecosystem do you think I should do?

2
And then, when I’ve chosen the ecosystem, what should I say about it? Shall I just talk about the problems,
or (28) should I think of solutions?
It would be great if you could reply today, because if I don’t choose quickly and start collecting information,
I’m going to run out (29) of time.
Yours,
Julie

According to the website TripAdvisor, there are four particularly wonderful historical pieces of architecture
which you can still visit.

The Colosseum in Rome is visited by more people than any other site in the world. It receives approximately
7.4 million visitors every year. It was built between 72 and 96 CE to hold over 60,000 people watching the
violent games of Roman times.

The Great Wall of China is the oldest historical site on this list. A small part of the wall was built in the 7th
century BCE to protect the country from enemies. However, most was completed between 1368 and 1644
CE, during the Ming dynasty. The wall is approximately 13,171 miles long.

Machu Picchu is an ancient city in Peru, high in the Andes mountains. The city was built by the Inca empire
around 1450, but people stopped living there a hundred years later when the Spanish arrived in South
America. No one is sure of its original purpose, but it was probably a palace for an Incan ruler.

Petra is an ancient city in southern Jordan which was built as a place for people to buy and sell goods. It dates
back to 400 BCE, although we do not have a historical record until the Greeks attacked the city in 312 BCE.
The inhabitants defended the city, but it was finally conquered by the Romans in 106 CE. The ruins were
rediscovered by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812. Today, Petra is loved by tourists for its
impressive architecture and ancient history.

Listening 1:
5
I tell my parents again and again that I’m 16 now and I can make my own decisions! They don’t have to tell
me when to go to bed and when to wake up. Or to say, ‘Do your homework now before you go out with your
friends.’ I never forget to do my homework, and I always get good marks!

Also, my mother doesn’t always need to come with me when I go to buy clothes. I’m not going to spend
money on an expensive dress which is the new thing from Paris! I don’t have enough money anyway.

It’s funny, actually, because in many ways, my parents are quite modern. I mean, they’re on social media and
the latest apps, and they like the same kind of music as me. They don’t seem to be worried because I’ve got a
boyfriend. But they just can’t stop trying to control me like they had to when I was six or 10.

When I think about it, most of the time arguments start because of something to do with schoolwork. I
suppose they’re worried that I won’t get into university, so I’ll spend my life in a boring job. But I will get in,
and I’ll get on well there and get a fantastic job when I leave, and then I’ll travel and make lots of money.

Listening 2:

The meaning of ‘heritage’ has changed over the years. The word used to mean the buildings which
represented an ancient culture, a culture which no longer existed.

However, heritage now is not just buildings and not just things from ancient cultures. It is natural landscapes
like rainforests and caves, and it is also buildings from living cultures, if those buildings represent a
particular period in history or a style of architecture. For example, some concrete and glass buildings from
the 1960s which are considered ugly by many people are on the list of heritage sites because that style of
architecture is not used anymore.

We must preserve all these heritage sites. I will talk later about the problems of preserving natural heritage
sites, but before that, many of the buildings and monuments on the UN list of World Heritage Sites are
endangered, and not just by one thing. Firstly, there is damage from weather, especially rain and wind. This
happens all the time, so parts of the sites need repairing. Next, there are wars in the areas of the sites.
Buildings and monuments are damaged by accident during the fighting. Then we have people who damage or
destroy buildings because they are from different religions, and they hate certain religious buildings and
monuments, like temples and mosques, or statues of gods. Finally, a sad case is cultural tourists – people who
come to admire a heritage site, but then damage it by touching it or taking away a stone or an ancient object.
