Welcome to the English 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on
Electronic Search Engine!
How was your experience with technology? Does it make your work easier
and faster?

Nowadays, your knowledge in the use of internet is already a must. This


would help you to search information especially that we are now in the world of
technology.

As you go through, you will experience different individual activities and


encounter texts that will help you answer the question: How does Electronic Search
Engine help you in doing your research activities?

Likewise, your skills in reading, vocabulary development, viewing, listening,


language fluency, and grammar awareness will be enhanced.

In the end, you will be compiling all your Electronic Search Engine (ESE)
activities.

In this module, you are guided with a set of learning icons that will help you

What I Need to Know

Welcome to a new year of discovery and explorations! This module is designed for
you to meet your unique needs and interests. This aims at the comprehensive
development of your reading, vocabulary development, viewing, listening, language
fluency, and grammar awareness. As a 21 st century learner, you must be fully equipped
with knowledge on how to use a search engine to make learning more effective.
Electronic Search Engine allows you to find the information that is valuable to you. It
eliminates the need to move through numerous amounts of irrelevant web pages.
Essentially, it allows you not only quickly, but also easily, find the information that is
essential for your progress.
As you go along with this module, you will find out that Electronic Search Engine
can provide you with search results that lead to relevant information on high quality
websites.
This module is divided into two lessons, namely:
 Lesson 1 – What is Electronic Search Engine
 Lesson 2 – How to use an Electronic Search Engine

After reading this module, you should be able to use a search engine to conduct a
guided search on a given topic (EN7SS-II-c-1.5.3). Specifically, you should:
1. define what Electronic Search Engine (ESE) is;
2. identify five most commonly used search engines;
3. compile all research activities on electronic search engines.

Look closely at the picture. What do you think is the student doing? Like most of
the students these days, she is probably doing research using different search engines.
What do you think is an Electronic Search Engine (ESE)?
This lesson will help you maximize the use of electronic search engine most
especially in conducting a guided search on a given topic.

Electronic Search Engine
 a software system that is designed to search for information on the World Wide
Web.
 The search results are generally presented in a line of results often referred to
as search engine results pages (SERPs)
 Search Engine is a computer program that searches databases and internet
sites for the documents containing keywords specified by a user.

eBizMBA in October 2015. These rankings are continuously updated using various
factors.

1. Google
 Estimated 1,100,000,000 unique monthly visitors
 Originally known as BackRub.
 A search engine that started development in 1996 by Sergey Brin and
Larry Page as a research project at Stanford University to find files on the
Internet.

 A search engine created and operated by Microsoft, replacing its former
Live Search, Windows Live Search, and MSN Search offerings.

 Short for Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle! Yahoo! Was created
in February, 1994 by two Stanford University Ph.D candidates David Filo

 Ask is the common name for Ask.com search engine, which allows users
to perform a search in the form of a question to find relevant results.
 Ask.com was started in 1996 by Garret Gruener and David Warthen.

 Estimated 125,000,000 unique monthly visitors
 America Online is the name of a popular online service. It is often
abbreviated as AOL.
 The company founded in 1985 and is considered an early Internet
pioneer, providing many Internet services in the 1990’s.

of. These will also provide you information on current news and events around the world.

engine in searching for a specific topic. Since Google is the most commonly used search
engine as mentioned earlier, you will be exploring it. Are you ready?

How to use the

2 Electronic Search Engine

What is It

Searching the Web requires both skills and patience but, where should we start?

To enter the world wide web (www), you need to have either of these two:

 Internet connection or WIFI (it can be a modem or a pocket wifi) or


 Data subscription (cellphone load)

There are two ways to search for information:


A. Using keyword/s
B. Using Uniform Resource Locator (URL)

Searching Using Keyword/s


Follow the steps wholeheartedly that are provided for you so you can arrive at the
correct output.
Step 1. Open the page first using Google Chrome and enter the texts or
keywords in the search bar pointed by the red arrow to find relevant information.

Step 2. Type in the search bar the word “COVID-19”.
There, you will find out several information about the topic.

Step 3. Click the first search result inside the red box and copy the information about
COVID-19 in your English activity notebook.

\jStep 4 Click the Back Button to go back to the Home Page.
A. If you’re using a cellphone click the x button as pointed by the red arrow.
B. If you’re using a computer, click the back button enclosed in a red box as
shown in picture B.

Step 5. To explain more, open the page shown below and type this URL

Points to Remember

To better get specific results:


 Use minus sign or hyphen (-) to exclude a word.
 Use quotation marks (“ ”) to find pages that have the exact term.

This time, you will research using Uniform Resource Locator or URL. URL is the
page address that you will find in the long bar at the top of your Web browsers.

Searching Using URL

Step 1. Click Google Chrome in your screen.

This will appear in your screen.

Step 2. Type the name of the website

in the address page as pointed by the red arrow.

Step 3. Press ← Enter key if you are using a computer. Press the Search icon as
pointed by the red arrow if you are using a cell phone.

You are now about to explore the content of the URL.

Step 4. Read the content of the page and write 5 unfamiliar words that you have
encountered in your English activity notebook.

Step 5. Click the Back Button as pointed by the red arrow to go back to the Home Page.

Congratulations! You have successfully followed the steps in conducting a


guided search using Google. If you wish to gather more information, you are free to
explore more by following the same steps.

Electronic Search Engines like Google can be a resource that saves your time. In
this activity, you will learn how to search on your own using a given topic. Follow the
steps that you have learned from the previous activity so you can arrive at the correct
answer. Write your answers in your English activity notebook.

As you are about to end this module, your knowledge will be tested by applying all

Suppose you are going to write an essay about the origin of your municipality and
you need to gather the following information:

 number of barangays
 population
 festivals
 economy

Using your knowledge on search engine, write the possible keywords in


searching the information, copy the URL of your chosen search result and provide a
