Proposals
It is proposed to fix a 3m lighting column to two different types of precast kentledge blocks. To the top of these lighting
columns will be attached a luminaire and solar panel. These calculations are to determine the maximum horizontal wind
load for each of the kentledge blocks.

The two blocks to be considered are KM1000 and KM500 as detailed below by Elite Precast.

The lighting column is to be a BE Lighting column 3TG/FP which is a 140 dia tube with a self-weight of 29kg. To the top of
the column will be fixed a luminare 725 x 120 x 75 which weighs 3.6kg and a solar panel which is 1105 x 360 x 60 and
weighs 12kg.

Assume that the total area of the solar panel and luminare attract full wind load and the wind load on the column itself is
negligible. Ground bearing pressure is limited to 75 kN/m².;

KM1000 Base 3m High Column

The KM1000 base can resist an overturning moment of 3.1 kNm working back to the solar panel at the top of the column.

3.1 / 3 = 1.03 kN horizontal force. The combined area of the solar panel and luminaire = 0.48 m².

Therefore the maximum horizontal uniformly distributed load at the top of the column will be 2.15 kN/m²

Basic Wind Velocity BS EN1991-1-4

Basic Wind velocity vb = 44.1 m/s

KM1000 Base 4m High Column

The KM1000 base can resist an overturning moment of 3.1 kNm working back to the solar panel at the top of the column.

3.1 / 4 = 0.775 kN horizontal force. The combined area of the solar panel and luminaire = 0.48 m².

Therefore the maximum horizontal uniformly distributed load at the top of the column will be 1.615 kN/m²

Basic Wind Velocity BS EN1991-1-4

Fw = cscd cf qb(ze) Aref = 0.775 kN; 0.775 = 1 x 1.8 x qb (ze) x 0.48; Therefore qb (ze) = 896 N/m² qb = 0.613 vb2

Basic Wind velocity vb = 38.2 m/s

KM500 Base
The KM500 base can resist an overturning moment of 1.75 kNm again working back to the solar panel at the top of the
column.
1.75 / 3 = 0.58 kN horizontal force. With the same arrangement of solar panel and luminaire.
