Diagnostic Assessment 10. It is a type of assessment give prior to instruction.

II. Instructions: Answer the following questions briefly.

1. Since assessment is inherent in teaching-learning activities, discuss three courses of

activities that you will take in order to ensure excellent test score.

The three courses of activities that I will take and believed that I will get excellent test scores
are:

 Quizzes – it is a test of knowledge or an informal test given to students before or after

the lecture. I believe I can totally get high scores in this type of activity if it is done
after the discussion.
 Reflection Paper – is meant to illustrate your understanding of the material or
discussion and how it affects you as a person. I am a deep and soft person, I believe I
can get this done nicely because it is expressing what you feel.
 Oral Recitation – is when student stood before a teacher and was asked to give oral
explanations or answers on a variety of questions. I believe I will have high scores in
oral recitation because I know myself as a good listener, though I am not a good talker
but I believe I can get this done and achieve high scores. But it really depends on my
knowledge about certain things.

2. Among the listed job opportunities for BSMT/BSMLS graduates, which do you think is the
most appropriate? Explain.

Among the listed job opportunities for BSMT/BSMLS graduates, the way I see it, being a
Medical Technologist/clinical laboratory scientist is the most appropriate job. Simply because
BSMT stands for Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, and BSMLS stands for
Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences. The practice and the studies of BSMT
and BSMLS really suited the field of work Medical Technologist and Clinical Laboratory
Scientist have. It is the most specific type of job for BSMT/BSMLS.

3. Why are critical thinking and problem solving skills important to medical technologists?
Explain.

Critical thinking and problem solving skills is important to medical technologists because it is
badly needed in everyday work. It is important to use logic and reasoning to identify the
strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
Medical Technologists collect and analyze samples of blood, tissue, and body fluids using the
latest technology and analytical techniques that’s why both critical thinking and problem
solving skills is very important.

Lesson 6 PRE-TEST:

Instructions: Explain the concepts of biosafety and biosecurity in your own words.

Safety and security are two different things, they share the same meaning that is to be
protected from harm, but they do not share the same condition. Safety is the condition of
being protected from harm or other non-desirable outcomes caused by non-intentional failure,
while security is the condition of being protected from harm or other non-desirable outcomes
caused by intentional human actions or behavior (Coursera Inc. 2021). In medical sciences
we also have what we called biosafety and biosecurity. Bio as life, biosafety means life safety
and so biosecurity means life security. Life is also at stake in medical field that’s why
professionals in this field always battle for life not only for the patients and the people but
also themselves.

Just like safety and security, biosafety and biosecurity also do not share the same
condition, but share the same meaning or thought, they deal with related but distinctly
different issues. Biosafety aims at protecting public health and environment from accidental
exposure to biological agents. According to William Shiel Jr. (1996-2021), biosafety is the
application of knowledge, techniques and equipment to prevent personal, laboratory and
environmental exposure to potentially infectious agents or biohazards. Laboratory biosafety
practices are based on the principle of containment of biological agents. Hospitals and
laboratories have varieties of toxins and pathogens that is harmful for humans and the
environment, so in order to contain those elements biosafety issues are implemented.
Biosafety issues refer to the procedures, policies, and principles to be adopted to safeguard
the environment and the human population. That’s why we have biosafety technologies and
biosafety officers to ensure safety, also biosafety levels to warn people.

On the other hand, biosecurity is the protection of human and environment from
intentional release of biohazards by an individual. It also refers to measures aimed at
preventing the introduction and/or spread of harmful organisms (e.g. viruses, bacteria, etc.) to
animals and plants in order to minimize the risk of transmission of infectious disease
(Wikipedia). It has three major components and levels that ensure the safety of their
personnel and the security of the biological agents and toxins in use there. To sum it all up as

what I have read, biosafety protects people from germs, while biosecurity protects germs
from people, as simple as that.

Lesson 6 POST-TEST:

Instructions: Explain how biosafety and biosecurity are practiced in your institution.

Medina College is one of the medical institutions in the city I live in, and I am
honored that I belonged in here. In these types of institution, medical equipment, chemicals,
and hazardous elements are imperishable. Students in medical schools are practiced to
interact with these kinds of things as for the student’s chosen field of work in the future.

Biosafety and biosecurity as to what I have discussed in the pre-test, are both needed
to ensure safety of the people, environment, and the chemicals in use. Medical students like
me, will always encounter biosafety and biosecurity as part of the practice. As a medical
technology student, we need to examine different stuffs including elements and chemicals.
What we will do is not always perfect that’s why it is called practice, and so with biosafety
and biosecurity we can prevent and protect ourselves, the environment, and the institution
from the harm it might bring.

In my institution, biosafety and biosecurity are strictly practiced by everyone.

Honestly, I don’t really know about this so well because of the form of class we have now, I
only visited the school for just 4 times because my father will always do the taking and
passing of modules as I really dislike the heat in the city so I have no idea if our school have
biosafety and biosecurity or not, but I bet the school have, every medical institution must
have this in order to protect those things that are needed to protect. But as to what I’ve
understand, medical institutions practice biosafety and biosecurity with guidance from the
expert. Every medical institution have laboratories, and these laboratories contains hazardous
chemicals and pathogens that are harmful. In the practice of every student’s course or
program, some may have unintendedly impose harm and some may have intended it, with
biosafety and biosecurity it will be easy to solve these kinds of problem. These two are even
taught in the first years of medical studies to simply spread risk and management. No one can

easily access the laboratories and rooms with harmful chemicals unless permitted by the
experts. Biosafety issues are implemented and biosafety levels and biosecurity levels are
impose to signal as a warning. And so that is how my institution practice biosafety and
biosecurity.
