5.

2 Procedure
1. The maximum allowable pressure was calculated based on the maximum allowable stress
2. The strain gauge wires were connected to the strain indicator
3. The strain indicator was turned on, the gauge factor was set, and each channel of the stain
indicator was balanced.
4. The hydraulic pump was turned on and the pressure relief valve was set to the desired
value.
5. The maximum pressure was applied in 5 increments and ths strain gauge indicator was
read along with the corresponding pressure.

5.3 Analysis
5.3.1 Maximum allowable stress
The maximum allowable stress was given as 9000 psi [1]
The maximum pressure was given as 150 psi

Rearranging to solve for Pmax yields
𝜎 𝑡
𝑝𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 𝑚𝑎𝑥
𝑅
9000𝑝𝑠𝑖 × 0.1046𝑖𝑛
=
4.854𝑖𝑛
= 193.941 𝑝𝑠𝑖 // For hoop stress
𝜎𝑚𝑎𝑥 ×2𝑡
𝑝𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 𝑅
= 387.886 𝑝𝑠𝑖 // for Axial stress

5.3.2 Safety factor for test configuration as opposed to consumer application
