Title: Machines and Movement

Aim: To investigate the different types of levers.

Apparatus/Materials:

Procedure:
1. Using a book, fulcrum, wood plank and spring, build a lever.
2. Place the fulcrum to about 10cm from one edge.
3. Place the book on that edge and use the spring to pull/lift the load.
4. Record the effort needed and the distance moved by the effort and load.
5. Record your results in a table.
6. Change the position of the fulcrum and the load, so that the fulcrum is to the end and the
load is at the middle.
7. Repeat steps 4 and 5.
8. Move the load to the opposite end and the spring to the middle.
9. Repeat steps 4 and 5.

Analysis:
Answer the following questions in your discussion:
1. Which class of lever was which?
2. Which lever arrangement requires a smaller effort to lift the load?
3. Was it easier to apply the effort upwards or downwards?
4. Which levers require the smallest and largest efforts to move the load?
