PHYSICAL FITNESS
EXERCISE - A type of physical activity consisting of planned, structured, and repetitive bodily
movement done to improve or maintain one or more components of physical fitness.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY - Any bodily movement produced by the contraction of skeletal muscles
that results in a substantial increase over resting energy expenditure.
FITNESS - The ability to carry out daily tasks with vigor and alertness, without undue fatigue,
and with ample energy to enjoy leisure-time pursuits and meet unforeseen emergencies. A set
of attributes or characteristics that people have or achieve that relates to the ability to perform
physical activity.

Health-related Fitness Components
- Are those that are designated as improving health, wellness, and one's quality of life.
Improvements in these components can enhance physical performance.
Skill-related Fitness Components
- These components are essential to athletic performance and the ability to perform
activities of daily living.
LESSON 1 INTRODUCTION TO PATHFIT
- Physical Education is about movement. Movement is fundamental and essential to life,
work, and play. Movement competency facilitates participation and allows individuals to
derive pleasure and satisfaction from physical activities. An individual who can move
proficiently has the skills and knowledge related to movement and values purposeful
moving for life.
- Physical Education, therefore, is responsible for helping students take on the
responsibility of learning by providing them with the capacity to make reasoned and
wise choices through a lifelong process of change. Furthermore, it provide students with
skills to be responsible adults and contributing members of the society, the nation and
the world.
What is Physical Education?
- instruction in the development and care of the body ranging from simple calisthenics,
exercises to a course of study providing training in hygiene, gymnastics, and the
performance and management of athletic games
Physical Fitness - refers to a set of attributes which enable an individual to be physically active.
The term is often associated with health and well-being, since being physically fit is usually
associated with improved health such as heart and lung function (cardiovascular fitness).
Objectives of Physical Education
1. Physical development
(a) Proper growth and development
(b) Proper functioning of various systems of the body
(c) Development of skills through better neuromuscular coordination
(d) Development of strength and endurance.
2. Psychological development
(a) Development of healthy interests and attitudes
(b) Satisfaction and channelising of emotions
(c) Removing worry, tension, etc. through participation in sports.
3. Social development
(a) Developing qualities of sympathy and cooperation with others
(b) Becoming a worthy member of home and society.
4. Moral development
(a) Development of self-control
(b) Development of sportsmanship
(c) Developing leadership qualities
(d) Development of person
COMPONENTS OF HEALTH-RELATED FITNESS
Fitness - is defines as a condition in which an individual has enough energy to avoid fatigue and
enjoy life.
Physical Fitness - is divided into four health and six skill related components.
Skill Related Fitness - enhances one's performance in athletic or sports event.
Health Related Fitness - is the ability to become and stay physically healthy.
Skill Related Fitness - enhances one's performance in athletic or sports event.
Health Related Fitness - is the ability to become and stay physically healthy.

Health Related - a components focus on factor that promote optimum health and prevent on
set of disease and problems associated with inactivity.
(Four Components of health-related Fitness)
Cardio Vascular Fitness - is the ability of the heart (Cardio) and circular system (Vascular) to
supply oxygen to muscles for an intended period of time.
Muscular strength and endurance - is the muscles ability to produce effort or perform work.
Muscular endurance - refers to the ability of the muscles to work over an extended period of
time without fatigue.
Muscular strength - refers to the maximum amount of force a muscles can exert against an
opposing force.
Flexibility - is the ability to move a body through a full range of motion (ROM) at a joint.
Body Composition - is the ratio of body fat to lean body mass (including water, bones, muscles,
and connective tissues.)
BENEFITS OF HEALTH-RELATED FITNESS
1. increase muscles tone and strength
2. decrease susceptibility to injuries and illness
3. improves bone mineral density
4. reduces risk osteoporosis
5. improves posture
6. increase efficiency of the respiratory and circulatory systems.
7. decrease risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

9. decrease risk of diabetes and some cancer
10. improve self-esteem and self- confidence
11. decrease body fat and improves metabolism and increase energy level and academic
achievement

SKILLS-RELATED FITNESS COMPONENTS (Components of Skills Related)


SKILL RELATED FITNESS COMPONENT
- aspect of fitness which form the basis for successful sport or activity participation
WHATS AND WAYS OF SKILL RELATED FITNESS
SKILL RELATED FITNESS - the ability to perform during games and sports; also called
performance fitness. Skill related fitness has six components:
AGILITY - The ability to change and control the direction and position of your body while
maintaining a constant, rapid motion.
BALANCE - The ability to control or stabilize your equilibrium while moving staying still.
SPEED - The ability to move your body or parts of your body quickly.
COORDINATION - The ability to use your eyes and ears to determine and direct the smooth
movement of your body. Speed, reaction time, and agility may influence level of coordination.
POWER - The ability to move your body parts quickly while at the same time applying the
maximum force of your muscles.
REACTION TIME - The ability to react or respond quickly to what you hear, see, or feel.
