Comparison & Contrast Essay

When we compare we look at the similarities between two things, people, places,
or ideas. When we contrast we look at the differences. Often such essays do one of the
following: clarify something unknown or not well understood, lead to a fresh insight or new
way of viewing something, or show that one subject is better than the other. Use
comparison and contrast words and phrases such as: like, similar to, also, unlike, similarly,
in the same way, likewise, again, compared to, in contrast, on the contrary, however,
although, yet, even though, still, but, nevertheless, at the same time, regardless, despite,
while, on the other hand, etc.

Selecting a Topic
The two things you compare and contrast must be of the same general category or
class but also different. You could not compare a mouse with an elephant but you can
compare and contrast two different types of elephants. Brainstorm for similarities and
differences. Gather your ideas by writing down characteristics of each thing.

Essay Structure
Your essay should have an introduction with a thesis statement. In the body the same
points should be discussed for both subjects. Also include a conclusion where you
summarize your main points or restate your main idea. Select one of the following
organizational structures:
