#42, CROCHET PATTERN

VICTORIAN COLLAR/SCARF
BY M.E. HARRINGTON
M.E.H. DESIGNS

MATERIALS:

Worsted yarn, approx. 150 grams total.

(This design used one strand of variegated “Berry”, and one strand of ivory.)
Crochet Hook size 6.5 mm (US K 10.5)
Darning needle
Button

INSTRUCTIONS:
(First, you will be making the neck section, then the capelet
portion gets worked along one edge of the neck section.
The foundation chain of 12 stitches, is the height of the neckwarmer, from the collarbone to the chin.)

1. Using two strands of yarn, held as though they were one.

Chain 12, double crochet in the 2nd stitch from the
hook, and in each stitch across the chain. Chain 2 and turn.

2. ( Work in only the back loop of the top of the double crochet stitches across the row. (In crochet,
every stitch, when viewed from the top has two sides. Work in only the back side of the stitch. This is a
much more attractive, as well as more soft and flexible stitch, and is always recommended in making
garments.)
Double crochet in each stitch across the row, chain 2 and turn.

3. Repeat row 2, until your piece measures approx. 18 inches, or whatever

measurement you determine you
would like, in order to fit around the neck comfortably. It will be approx. 20
rows.
( If you end up at 19 rows, make a decision to add one row, or reduce one
row in order to have an even number of rows for ease of continuing with
the pattern design. ) (The piece will resemble a small scarf.)

ADD THE SHELL EDGE ALONG THE TOP OF THE COLLAR:

(Working down one long side):

Chain 1, 3 double crochet in the base of the next double crochet.

(You will be working down a side in which you are not working into the tops of stitches, but rather along the
sides of the double crochet stitches. Insert the hook into the base of the double crochet stitches.)

Single crochet in the base of the next double crochet stitch. Continue across the row, making shell stitches in
this manner.

( close-up of stitches)

When you reach the corner, turn, and continue along the short
side. *Skip 3 stitches, 3 double crochet in the next stitch. Repeat from * two more times.

BEGIN FORMING THE CAPELET SECTION OF THE

COLLAR:

1. Chain 2, 2 double crochet stitches in the corner, chain

1, double crochet in the base of the next double crochet.
(You are now working along the other long side of the
foundation piece.)
*Chain 1, 3 double crochet in next base of double
crochet of the foundation piece, chain 1, double crochet
in the next base of double crochet stitch.
Continue from * across the row. At the end of the row,
chain 5 and turn.

2. 3 double crochet stitches in the center stitch of the

shell cluster of the previous row.
(If for some reason, you have ended the previous
row with a double crochet, it does not matter,
simply make the 3 double crochet cluster into the
top of that stitch.).

Across the row, make a 3 double crochet cluster

alternately into the top of the single double
crochet of the previous row, and into the center
stitch of the 3 double crochet cluster of the
previous row.) One complete row of 3 double
crochet clusters have been formed.

3. Chain 3 and turn. Make 3 double crochet clusters into

the center stitch of the clusters of the previous row. At
the end of the row, make a cluster into the 4th stitch of
the chain 5 at the beginning of the row.

4. Repeat row 3.

5. Final row: 2 double crochet in the center stitch of the cluster of the previous row, chain 3, 2 more double
crochet into the same stitch. (One open cluster formed.) Repeat making open clusters (2 double crochet,
chain 3, 2 double crochet) in the center double crochet stitch of the cluster of the previous row, across the
row. Fasten off.

(Close-up of the neckwarmer, after the final row of stitches is completed)

Your Victorian Collar/Scarf is now finished. Sew a button in the center of the neck section, and button it into
any space on the other side.

OPTIONAL: CORD TIE (Top right photo at the top of the pattern.)

If you would like to tie your collar on, using two strands of yarn, crochet a chain of 50 stitches. (Make 2, one
for each side.) Attach to each side, in the center of the neck section. Cut off the end of yarn at each end, and
tie a knot in the ends of the cords.
