Tragedy in the Community

The “Laredo Morning Times” was founded on June 14, 1892. The community quickly

took part in the uprising of this local news outlet. The people of Laredo put their trust in “Laredo

Morning Times” to never waver and inform the city and its citizens about what is currently

happening in the community or the city. “Laredo Morning Times” is an important part of the

community because of the power of knowledge it holds that then is later shared with the people

of Laredo. Ever since it was first published “Laredo Morning Times” has been the number one

news provider for the city of Laredo. The article that is being analyzed is from “Laredo Morning

Times” and the genre of this article is a report and analysis. The article is about a local Border

Patrol agent who murdered his girlfriend and their 1-year-old son. This article is easy to access

as it was found on the “Laredo Morning Times” website. The genre is a report and analysis, so

the community is getting the full run down of what took place and how the writer of the report is

interpreting the message to notify the community of what is happening.

This report is about former United States Border Patrol agent who murdered his girlfriend

and their one-year-old child. The former United States Border Patrol agent (Ronald Anthony

Burgos-Aviles) was married to other women then he had an affair with Grizelda Hernandez (27).

Out of that affair they had Dominic Alexander Hernandez (1). Grizelda had put in a request to

have Burgos-Aviles pay child support. When Burgos-Aviles got the letter, he viewed it as a

threat to his marriage and then led to the unfortunate murder of Grizelda and Dominic. Burgos-

Aviles first went after Grizelda then proceeded to stab her 27 times. As stated in the article
Mancillas

“Grizelda had stab wounds on her head, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, back, and ear.” Burgos-

Aviles then went after his son, lifted his shirt, and proceeded to stab him in the heart. Burgos-

Aviles then called 911 and tried to act as if he had found them deceased. That was certainly not

the case at all. This awful heinous crime is the unfortunate reality of what Burgos-Aviles did.

This crime changed the community’s view of the people who were trained to protect this

country.

The genre of this article is a report and analysis therefore, it gives the reader or the

community a chance to have an insight into exactly what went on in this case. A report and

analysis are used to inform the audience of nothing but facts about the topic. The audience in this

case is the whole community of Laredo and the readers of “Laredo Morning Times.” Burgos-

Aviles case's effect on the community was immense when it first happened on April 9, 2018.

People started to question how safe men and women in uniform are. Laredo is a small border

town that usually does not have a lot of violent crimes, so for something of this severity to

happen is shocking to everyone, especially in the community.

This article starts with the title, and it is very straight to the point “Former USBP agent

Burgos-Burgos-Aviles found guilty of murdering lover, their son.” Right off the bat the title tells

the reader exactly what they are getting into. There are then images of Burgos-Aviles in the court

room followed by an image of district attorney Isidro R. "Chilo" Alaniz holding up a small green shirt

covered in blood, and a picture of both Grizelda and Dominic. Looking into these images the shirt worn

by Dominic the day he got murdered said “Lucky I am!” That is so devastating, then looking at the blood

on the shirt; that image is so incredibly saddening. The community was severely affected by this tragedy

especially after reading and seeing the images. The report then goes further into the case explaining

what occurred on that night. For example, “The jury rendered the verdict at about 10 p.m. Thursday

night following four hours of deliberation in the 49th District Courtroom.” This sentence delivers

a lot of insight into exactly how long the jurors took to make the final decision that led to

Burgos-Aviles' sentencing. Attorney Alaniz also made it a point to say that he and his team

accounted for “almost every minute of Burgos-Aviles’ whereabouts” the day of the murder. That

sentence tells the reader or the community that attorney Alaniz was so confident in himself and

his team.

Ultimately the report is ended with an extraordinarily strong and powerful quote by

attorney Alaniz, “No matter what reason he had, he did not have the right to end their life, not the

way he did.” The report ended in such a way that it had a strong impact on the reader and the

community all at the same time. Leaving whoever read this article about a merciless man who

committed a heinous crime, in shock on how a person in uniform could ever do such a terrible

thing.
