UNDERRATED ARCHITECTURAL MARVELS
AROUND THE WORLD

1. BELLAGIO

• Bellagio is a resort, luxury hotel and casino on the Las Vegas


Strip in Paradise, Nevada.
• The original tower is over 500 feet tall with a staggering 3000
rooms.
• Bellagio's design architect was DeRuyter Butler.
• Peter Smith was the project executive.
• Construction on the Bellagio began in May 1996.

2. ALLEGHENY COUNTY COURTYARD


Pittsburgh's original courthouse, first occupied in 1794.
• It was a wooden structure located on one side of Market Square.
• The winner of the competition was Boston architect Henry
Hobson Richardson.
• The construction of the buildings was begun by the Norcross
Brothers.
• The courtyard is surrounded by four stories in three sides.

3. UNION STATION KANSAS CITY


• The beautiful BeauxArts station was the second largest in the
U.S.
• It was huge, 850,000 square feet.
• 95 feet up to is gloriously ornate ceiling with a trio of
chandeliers each weighing 3500 pounds.
• Renovation began in 1997 and was completed in 1999.
• Half of the $250 million restoration of Union Station.
• The remaining money was raised through private donations and
federal funding.

4. OLD FAITHFUL INN – YELLOWSTONE
NATIONAL PARK
• The national historic stone and log landmark dates from 1905.
• It is also the biggest log structure in the world.
• The Old House is rotated 90 degrees with respect to Old
Faithful so that a view of the geyser is framed by the entrance
porch for arriving visitors.
• The inn's architect was 29-year-old Robert Reamer.

5. DOUGLAS HOUSE-HARBOR SPRINGS


• It is an extremely ambitious structure, packing a lot into its
small residential size.

• The material is reinforced concrete.
• The house was completed in 1967 and featured on the cover of
a magazine.
• Stairways were located in the corners of the structure so that
they would not block views or sunlight.
• The fourth floor serves as the home's entry from the bridge.

6. SAFECO FIELD – SEATTLE 135


• It presents itself with a curved brick facade retro homage to the
great ballparks of old.
• The unique 22 million pound retractable roof protects field.
• An underground heating system induces the 7 grass blend of
Kentucky blue and perennial rye to turn green by opening day.

• It affords grand views of the Seattle skyline and Puget Sound.
