Materials needed:
Preparing the bottle: Fill the bottle approximately three-quarters full with tap water.
Adding the detergent: Add between 1 and 2 teaspoons of liquid detergent into the water
inside the bottle. This detergent will help create more visible bubbles during the tornado.
Securing the lid: Place the cap securely on the bottle and ensure it is tightly closed to
prevent spills.
Vertical bottle spinning: Hold the bottle by its neck and start spinning it rapidly in circles in a
vertical position. Let the water inside the bottle begin to spin with the motion.
Observing the tornado: As you spin the bottle, observe how the liquid inside the bottle starts
swirling, forming a vortex resembling a tornado.
Stopping the spinning motion: After a few seconds, stop the bottle's spinning motion. You'll
notice the tornado in the water inside the bottle gradually dissipating.
Repeating the process: Repeat steps 4 to 6 several times to see how the tornado forms
inside the bottle repeatedly.
Varying the speed: Experiment by varying the speed at which you spin the bottle to observe
how it affects the size and speed of the tornado in the water.
Observations and conclusions: Observe and discuss how the tornado forms in the bottle,
how it dissipates, and similarities with an actual tornado. Ask questions about the water
movement and how the detergent influences bubble formation.
Cleanup and precautions: After conducting the experiment, ensure to clean any spills and
store the materials properly. Additionally, be careful while conducting the experiment to avoid
knocking over or spilling the bottle.
