OGL 481 Pro-Seminar I:

PCA-Symbolic Frame Worksheet


Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the symbolic frame
2. Apply the symbolic frame to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

The situation is my taking over a remodeling project, and the project as a whole.
The project is to redo the entire roof of the building, and finish the interior. My role in
this particular situation is project manager.

2) Describe how the symbols of the organization influenced the situation.

The symbol of the Air Force greatly influenced the situation. Within the symbol
there are three diamonds that represent the three core values of the Air Force; Integritgy
first, Service before self, and Excellence in all we do. These core values are at the heart
of every decision that is made within the organization and it is reflected in this situation.

When there is a project to be done it is expected to be done well. Hence,


excellence in all we do. I know for a fact that me and my team put our best foot forward
while working on this project. Especially since we saw what was done before us and how
annoying it was to have to fix before we could even do what we needed to do. So we told
ourselves that we would make sure that if in however many years something needs to be
redone again, that that team would not say the same things about us that we were saying
about the team before us. In order to accomplish this the other two core values would
factor in as well. We had to put the service before ourselves, and have the integrity to
continue to do things the right way even when it got difficult, or hot, or we had to stay
late. That way when all is said and done what would be left is a project that we could all
walk away from with pride.

3) Recommend how you would use organizational symbols for an alternative course of
action regarding your case.

Regarding my case, I do not think that there is a alternative course action. I think
this is due to the fact that the core values of the Air Force are actually good core values to

have in general. As you can see they work hand in hand with each other. In order to put
service before self you have to have the integrity to do so, and because you do that you
will put excellence in all you do.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

Just like in the alternative course of action section, and all of the others frames,
there is not much that I would do differently. In this particular frame, there is nothing that
I would do differently. The Air Force symbol and its core values were absolutely
invaluable throughout the duration of this project. If you have not read my prior frame
worksheets, I will say it again, I am one that does not try to dwell on past mistakes,
wondering what I could have done differently. Instead I just trying to take what happened
and learn from it.
