Scope

Cranes can be used to lift and lower

materials and to transport them from
place to place. It is mainly used for
lifting heavy things. XCMG Crane can
be used just lifting up and down for the
heavy load.
Task
All signals must be given by a standard method.
The crane operator must be able to see the person signalling
clearly and operate safely.
Principle Hazards
 Equipment Damage
 Personal Injury
 Overhead electrical line
 The load can strike to people and equipment
 Tip over
 Boom collapse
Hazard Controls
 Move crane controls smoothly. Avoid abrupt, jerky
movements of the load.
 Verify that the load is not heavier that the maximum load
capacity.
 Do not attempt lifts beyond the rated load capacity of a
slings.
 Do not lift a load from the side. Centre the crane directly
over the load before hoisting to avoid swinging the load.
Hazard Controls
 Demarcate the working area by road cones or barrier
tapes.
 Conduct regular inspection of tyres for excessive wear
and damage.
 Do not allow lifting more than safe working load (SWL )
 Do not allow anyone to ride on a load or hooks.
 Do not pass a load over workers.
 Do not reverse a motor until it has come to a full stop
except to avoid accidents.
 .Make sure all control bottoms are labelled to indicate
their function.
Hazard Controls

 Make sure sling ropes and hooks are properly seated in its
load.
 Hook should not be cracked, bent or twisted.
 Operator must know capacity of steel rope, synthetic web
slings.
Personal Protective Equipment
 Must wear completed PPE.
Task Steps
 Machine’s transmission gear must be putted neutral
position.
 Operate to the PTO by engine power before start loading
 The base of the jack should be fully supported and as level
as possible. When working on soft surfaces, put a sturdy
metal plate under the base of the jack for stability.
Task Steps
 A person qualified to give crane signals to the operator.
 There should be only one designated signaller at a time.
 Be in clear view of the crane operator.
 Have a clear view of the load and the equipment.
 Keep persons outside the crane's operating area.
Task Steps

 Hoist: With forearm vertical,

forefinger pointing up moves
the hand in a small horizontal
circle.
Task Steps

 Lower: With an arm extended

downward, forefinger pointing
down moves the hand in small
horizontal circles.
Task Steps
 Extending a telescoping boom.
(Telescope out)
 Hold both fists at waist level.
Point outward with your
thumbs, while keeping you’re
other fingers closed.
Task Steps

 Shortening a telescoping boom.

(Telescope in)

Safety Tips
 Power Lines
No part of any crane shall operate within 3 meters of any power line. If you are
called upon to do so, notify your supervisor.
 Contact with Power Lines
If your crane’s boom at any stage comes into contact with live overhead wires
carry out the following procedure.
If possible, stay on your machine until the boom is clear, or power is turned off.
Keep any contact between the machine and the ground as this may complete a
circuit to earth and cause a current to pass through your body.

 Warnings
Always be alert to other persons and vehicles and give warning whenever there is
possibility of an accident.
Safety Tips
 Keep Clear of Loads
You must not stand with the radius of a crane job and it suspended load unless
you are working within the crane. You must not walk underneath the suspended
load.
 Unsafe Surfaces
Do not drive the crane on to a surface, which in your opinion may not take the
weight of the crane. If you are at all doubt obtain the advice of your supervisor.
 Driving on Slopes
Do not drive the crane along a slope. When the crane is carrying a load it must be
driven up slopes in low forward gear and down slopes in reverse gear. This
ensures that the equipment remains stable.
 Rated Capacities
Do not lift load greater than the load capacity for your crane. When operating a
crane you must also take the working radius of the boom into consideration when
determining the maximum rated capacity of the unit.
