Be able to prepare for manicure treatments

(Learning Outcome 1)

1. Describe salon requirements for how you prepare your work area, your
client and yourself for a nail enhancement treatment. (f)

Work area: include all tools and equipment required, any hygiene requirements and ideal position for use

The work area should be clean and neatly presented. The workstation should be
disinfected and covered with a disposable covering. A trolley containing all products
used for the service should be in close proximity to the workstation.
Tools and products needed for the treatment include – Nail files, nail buffers, cuticle
clippers, cuticle knife if needed, orange wood stick, hoof stick, primer, liquid monomer
and acrylic powder or builder gel, acetone, nail polishes, cotton pads or balls, spatula,
brushes for application of acrylics or gels, gel wipe off solution, bowl/cup containing
barbicide to disinfect products, bowl to soak hands if needed, nail extensions, nail
clippers , hand cream, hand sanitisers, cuticle oil and towels.
Equipment needed includes- UV/Led lamp, electric nail file, nail bits and dappen dishes.
Prior to the use of tools and equipment. Such products should be disinfected, clean and
sterilised. This can be achieved through using an autoclave machine. Other ways of
sterilising products include use of UV lights and products such as barbicide. It is also
essential that products and tools are in good working order and used in line with the
manufacturer's instructions to avoid any safety issues.
PPE should also be used to ensure safety. PPE equipment an include, disposable
gloves, face masks, and a disposable apron. Hand sanitiser must also be available for
both client and technician.
There should be good lightening and a lamp should be used if needed to ensure clear
view of the treatment area. The working area should also be well ventilated.

Client: include what items of clothing etc must be removes, suitable positioning of client for treatment etc

The client's clothes and personal property should be protected from the treatment. In
order to ensure this the professional should ask the customer to remove any
jewellery/items and this must be placed in a safe area away from the treatment area.
Any clothing that may interrupt the treatment should also be removed, or adjusted
e.g.asking the client to roll up sleeves etc.
It is important that the client is seated in a chair which is appropriately adjusted to the
workstation and seated in a comfortable position to avoid any injuries or bodily strain.
The client will need to be seated directly opposite the professional however, personal
space should be maintained.
It's important that the treatment is completed in a well-lit area, and the client is
positioned in a way that the professional can work effectively whilst maintaining the
client's comfortability.
Prior to the treatment, a consultation should take place where the professional will ask
questions about the client in order to assess the appropriate treatment in line with the
client's needs.

Yourself: include personal presentation and hygiene

The nail technician should ensure good personal hygiene and appearance. This
includes making sure that appropriate day /light makeup is worn if worn, ensuring
that hair is neat and tied back, ensuring clean short nails and wearing appropriate
clothing and footwear. PPE equipment should also be worn.
The professional should ensure that hands are washed before, during and after
service.

2. Provide a description of the different consultation techniques, listed below,

used to identify treatment objectives. (h)

Visual:
This procedure entails examining the client's nails and skin. This is to guarantee that you
notice any issues that the client may have missed.

Manual:
This strategy entails walking the customer through a manual so that they can choose the
operation that they want.
Questioning:
Questioning is a strategy that uses open-ended and closed inquiries to try to
comprehend the client's problem. It is also necessary to understand what the client does
on a daily basis or whether the client is attending an event.
Listening:
This method entails listening to the client's perspective on the intended goal or
issues.Listening will allow the technician to understand the treatment needs and to be
aware of any underlying issues. Listening is also good for providing good customer
service as the client will feel valued.

Reference to client card:

The client card is a good source of information as it records vital information about the
client. Information such as health needs (conditions) are listed therefore, this helps the
technician to be aware of this helping to create safe working practices. It also contains
information about previous treatments and information such as follow on advice. Having
this information is good as the technician can tailor the service according to the client's
specific needs.

3. State the importance of carrying out a nail and skin analysis. (i)

It is important to carry out a nail and skin analysis as this helps to determine the type of
treatment given to clients. It can act as an assessment of health as the technician may
spot health conditions and advise the customer to see a health professional, it is also
important as it can help to identify any skin conditions or nail conditions which may or
may not be contiguous therefore, identifying the issue is important prior to undertaking
any treatments in order to refrain from spreading infections or causing harm to the
client. Additionally, it is important to carry out a nail and skin analysis to determine
which products can be used on the client. For example, the client may be allergic or
sensitive to certain products therefore, carrying out such an assessment can help the
professional to identify this and avoid using products which may cause harm.

4. Describe how to select products, tools and equipment to suit client

treatment needs, skin and nail conditions. (j)

Products, tools and equipment used are determined by the client's treatment needs, skin
and nail conditions. Through completing a consultation prior to the treatment, the nail
technician can determine which products, tools and equipment will be used. For
example, someone with a fungal infection would not be given treatment and asked to

see a GP whilst, someone with another condition such as "blue nail" could be treated
and advised to continue with regular skin and nail treatments to stimulate circulation.
Depending on what treatment is being done, the tools and equipment may also differ; for
example an individual requesting gel nails would not expect products used for acrylic
nails (i.e. acrylic powder) to be used during treatment.
Therefore, selection of products, tools and equipment is used depending on client needs
and personal conditions.

Be able to provide manicure treatments

(Learning Outcome 2)

5. Explain how to communicate and behave in a professional manner towards

your client. (h) Include verbal and non-verbal communication and professional ethical conduct

Nail technicians are required to present in a polite, cheerful and friendly manner.
Maintaining positive non-verbal communication such as friendly facial expressions,
making eye contact and demonstrating open body language. Good verbal
communication is also important when dealing with clients either face to face or over the
telephone. Speaking clearly and directly with clients in order to explain treatments, offer
aftercare advice, recommend products, and to seek agreement from the client.
Listening skills are also required in order to listen to the client's needs and address them
effectively. Nail technicians should also comply with professional ethical conduct which
means maintaining client confidentiality and showing respect for clients. If any issues
arise, such as complaints the professional should act calmly, remain professional and try
to resolve any issues. Advice or intervention from management should be sought in
case of further issues with the client.

6. Explain the importance of positioning yourself and your client correctly

throughout a manicure treatment. (j) Include therapist and client posture etc

It is important for the nail professional and the client to be correctly positioned
throughout a manicure treatment for several reasons. It's important for the nail
technician to be seated at a comfortable height and position to avoid back injury. If
seated too high the technician will have to hunch over to provide the service and if
seated too low, this can cause strain to the shoulders, neck and back. Additionally,
sitting with good posture and in a good position can help the professional to provide a
good service as it allows for a more smooth/free movement when providing a treatment.
Both client and professional should both be at the same height and use chairs which
support the back. They should also directly face each other with both knees under the
desk, helping to prevent unnecessary stretching or strain. When sitting spines should be
in a neutral position not leaning, forward or back to avoid twisting or hunching which can
cause back injuries. The client's hands or feet should be raised and positioned in order
to avoid bending or stretching forward. Wrists and feet should be kept straight and not
bent or twisted. When holding the client's hand or finger the professional should position
it so that pressure from the grasp is minimised. A relaxed minimal grasp should prevent
any strain. The workstation should also be placed away from direct sunlight to prevent
discomfort and product reactions.

7. Explain the importance of using products, tools, equipment and techniques

to suit the client’s treatment needs, nail and skin conditions. (k)
