The Impacts of Backlashing towards LGBTQAI+ Member’s

Sociological Behavior
INTRODUCTION

LGBTQIA+ is an acronym that encompasses a wide range of gender

and sexual identities that are frequently marginalized in society. The abbreviation

stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and asexual,

and the + represents a growing and new awareness of various aspects of the highly

diverse gender and sexual identities (Princeton Gender, Sexuality Resource Center,

n.d.). The term "backlashing" most often refers to negative or hostile reactions,

attitudes, and behaviors aimed at LGBT people or the LGBT community. Backlash

against LGBT members' sociological behavior can manifest in a variety of ways,

including discrimination, prejudice, violence, stigmatization, and exclusion. Backlash

can also manifest in the form of policies or legal actions that discriminate against

LGBT individuals or limit their rights and freedoms. In Philippine society, LGBT

members continue to face stigma, prejudice, and discrimination. Bullying, taunting,

and harassment of LGBT children and adolescents in families, schools, and

communities are examples of how this stigma manifests itself. LGBT Members are

frequently dealing social pressures to conceal, deny, or even change their identities and

expressions as a requirement for social acceptability and enjoyment of rights. Despite

the fact that many LGBT people learn to live with societal stigma, these experiences

can produce severe psychological discomfort, including immediate repercussions such

as fear, grief, isolation, rage, and internalized stigma that affects the members’

sociological behavior (Hatzenbuehler, 2009; Meyer, 2003). This anti-LGBT prejudice

and discrimination is often based on moral condemnation rhetoric and worsens by

ignorance or misconceptions linking various gender expressions and sexual

orientations with psychopathology or maladjustment. (Psychological Association of

the Philippines, n.d.).

The study conducted which aims to answer the main questions such as; 1. What

are the demographic information of the participants, in terms of sex, sexual identity,

gender expression, outness level, and geographic location specifically city, or

municipality. 2. How do LGBT individuals understand and express their identities in

relation to the larger LGBT community? 3. How does backlashing towards LGBT

members affects their sociological behavior? 4. What resilience aspects and coping

mechanisms do LGBT people use to overcome the challenges that they confront, and

how may they be improved?

Therefore, to conclude LGBT deals with a lot of social dilemmas such

discrimination, prejudice, violence, stigmatization, and exclusion as which impacted

the member’s mental and physical health that can affects their sociological behavior.
