TEE 4425 ANTENNA AND PROPAGATION: ASSIGNMENT 1

Q1) a) An earth station is receiving transmissions from a space research satellite on a

frequency of 136MHz.The satellite is at a range of 500km and its transmitter supplies 0.5W into

an aerial having a gain of 0.3 dBi with reference to an isotropic aerial. Assuming free space

propagation and taking the impedance of free space as 120π ohms , calculate ;

i) the power flux density in watts /

ii) the field strength in µV/ (3 marks)

b) If the aerial at the earth station has a gain of 20dB with reference to an isotropic aerial,

determine the signal power received (3 marks)

Q2) a) Explain the following terms as applied to antennas

i) Induction field ii) radiation field (2marks)

b) At a certain distance from an aerial , the radiation field has a magnetic field strength

of 265x AT/m. Determine;

i) The electric field strength ii) the power density at this point (2 marks)
