Laws Affecting the nursing profession in the Philippines and in other countries

● Republic Act No. 9173, also known as the Philippine Nursing Act of 2002, provides for
a more responsive nursing profession, repeals the previous nursing law, and sets the
standards for nursing education, practice, and regulation

● Republic Act No. 7164, also known as the Philippine Nursing Act of 1991, was the
previous nursing law that established the Board of Nursing, defined the scope of nursing
practice, and regulated the licensure and registration of nurses

● Republic Act No. 6675, also known as the Generics Act of 1988, promotes the use of
generic drugs and requires health professionals to prescribe drugs by their generic
names

● Republic Act No. 6713, also known as the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for
Public Officials and Employees, applies to nurses who work in the government sector
and prescribes the norms of conduct, duties, and responsibilities, as well as the
penalties for violations

● Republic Act No. 6725, also known as the Prohibition of Discrimination Against
Women, prohibits discrimination against women in the workplace, including in the
nursing profession, and provides for equal opportunities and benefits

● Republic Act No. 6727, also known as the Wage Rationalization Act, establishes a
national minimum wage and a regional wage structure for different sectors, including the
health sector, and provides for wage adjustment mechanisms and incentives

● Republic Act No. 6758, also known as the Salary Standardization Law, prescribes a
standardized salary scale for government employees, including nurses, and provides for
allowances, benefits, and incentives

● Republic Act No. 7875, also known as the National Health Insurance Act of 1995,
establishes the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation and provides for a
comprehensive healthcare system for all Filipinos, including nurses, through socialized
and privatized health insurance schemes

● Republic Act No. 8981, also known as the Professional Regulation Commission
Modernization Act of 2000, reorganizes and strengthens the Professional Regulation
Commission, which regulates the nursing profession and other professions, and
provides for its powers, functions, and responsibilities
● Republic Act No. 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of
2002, regulates the manufacture, sale, distribution, use, and possession of dangerous
drugs and other controlled substances, and provides for the roles and responsibilities of
health professionals, including nurses, in the prevention and treatment of drug abuse
and addiction

● Republic Act No. 9178, also known as the Barangay Micro Business Enterprises Act of
2002, encourages the formation and growth of barangay micro business enterprises,
including those engaged in health care services, and provides incentives, benefits, and
assistance for them

● Republic Act No. 9288, also known as the Newborn Screening Act of 2004, establishes
a national newborn screening system and provides for the roles and responsibilities of
health professionals, including nurses, in the implementation of newborn screening
programs and services

● Republic Act No. 9439, also known as the Hospital Detention Law, prohibits the
detention of patients in hospitals and medical clinics on grounds of nonpayment of
hospital bills or medical expenses and provides for penalties for violations

● Republic Act No. 9502, also known as the Universally Accessible Cheaper and Quality
Medicines Act of 2008, amends the Intellectual Property Code and other laws to ensure
the availability, accessibility, and affordability of quality medicines for all, especially the
poor, and provides for the roles and responsibilities of health professionals, including
nurses, in the promotion and use of quality medicines

● Republic Act No. 9710, also known as the Magna Carta of Women, recognizes the
rights of women and provides for the protection and promotion of their human rights and
welfare, including their health rights and access to health services, and provides for the
roles and responsibilities of health professionals, including nurses, in the implementation
of the law

● Republic Act No. 10354, also known as the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive
Health Act of 2012, provides for a national policy on responsible parenthood and
reproductive health and provides for the roles and responsibilities of health
professionals, including nurses, in the delivery of reproductive health care services,
information, and education

● Republic Act No. 10586, also known as the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of
2013, penalizes drivers who operate a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol
or dangerous drugs, and provides for the roles and responsibilities of health
professionals, including nurses, in the conduct of drug and alcohol testing and the
provision of emergency care to victims of road accidents
● Republic Act No. 10606, also known as the National Health Insurance Act of 2013,
amends the previous law further strengthens and expands the coverage and benefits of
the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and provides for the roles and
responsibilities of health professionals, including nurses, in the implementation of the law

● Republic Act No. 10643, also known as the Graphic Health Warnings Law, requires
tobacco products to bear graphic health warnings depicting the harmful effects of
tobacco use and provides for the roles and responsibilities of health professionals,
including nurses, in the promotion of tobacco control and the prevention and treatment of
tobacco-related diseases

● Republic Act No. 10645, also known as the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010,
grants additional benefits and privileges to senior citizens, including free and expanded
healthcare services, and provides for the roles and responsibilities of health
professionals, including nurses, in the provision of geriatric care and the protection of the
rights and welfare of senior citizens
