Cat in The Rain
Cat in The Rain
Cat in The Rain
Setting
At first: description of a sunny, hotel room facing the sea, public garden with palms an Green
benches, bright colors
“There were big palms and green benches… an artist with his easel”
Point of view
Characters
George: the American husband who only cares about reading and books (passive)
The hotel-keeper: looks after “the American wife”, he is there only to serve her. He is old and
kind ->what she wants in a husband
The American wife: sensible, needs to take care of a baby cat, natural, satisfied (more or less)
and shy
“The American Wife stood at the window looking out. outside right under the window a car
was crouched under one of the dripping green tables. The cat was trying to make herself so
compact that…”
“I wants it so much”, she said. “I don’t know why I wanted it so much. I wanted that poor kitty.
It isn’t any fun to be a poor kitty out in the rain.”
Symbolism
*iceberg theory
Protagonists: often stoical men who live the expression “grace under pressure”
Prefers to leave details of character to the sensibilities of the reader, allowing the characters to
speak for themselves free of an omniscient narrator’s subjective observations
