I
recently decided to make
a WW2 British Army
'Bishop' self-propelled
gun combining the
chassis from Tamiya's 1:35
Valentine Mk.II and the
turret from the Dragon/
VM Model Bishop kit. The
panels of the turret did
not fit very well, so I had
to file and carve the edges
until they came together
properly. I fitted items from
a MiniArt stowage set to the
track-guards because I really
liked the uneven shapes,
applying epoxy putty because
there are some areas without
wrinkles, due to moulding
reasons. The sandbags were
formed from putty. We can see clearly where the Tamiya Valentine ends (sand-coloured parts) and VM's turret (grey) begins!
That's more like it! Dust, scratched paint and more bring the model to life

It would have been nice if the manufacturer had

this kit; highly

The fuselage parts are brought together. The spine was fitted but it left a
small, unsightly joint so it was filled with Mr Surfacer 500. To avoid too
much overflow, some masking tape was used to form a boundary. Once
dry, the putty was sanded with fine sandpaper (8,000). The fuselage did
not suffer from any other defects or fitting problems

Before gluing the top surfaces which fit perfectly, don't forget to drill the anchoring points for the
future loads and tanks. Once this was done, the wings were cemented to the fuselage. Zoukei

The wing tips with a very positive dihedral are glued. Once again,
tenons are present for an easy and symmetrical installation
For the upper surfaces, the painting was done freehand for the
camouflage, following the scheme provided with the kit. The shading
was achieved using lightened mixes. White over-sprays were applied to
the darker areas of the camouflage; the camouflage colours would be
applied over them. A coat of Tamiya X-22 Clear gloss varnish was used
to temporarily finish this phase
The nozzle outlets were masked off then painted only with Alclad 2 paints. A first coat of High Speed

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC
www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk
This month we have an interesting new product
line from Eduard named ‘Eddie The Riveter’. It
takes the form of surface-detail decals, with the
first set aimed a specific kit; Zvezda's 1:48 Mi-24
Hind helicopter. Upon its release, this otherwise
excellent model was somewhat marred by the
complete lack of rivets on its airframe, making
it look too 'smooth'. In 1:72 this wouldn't have
been such an issue but in 1:48 the rivets' absence
was very noticeable. To remedy this, Eduard have
created a three-sheet pack of decals carrying
thousands of tiny, raised rivets arranged in the
correct patterns for the Hind's exterior. They
are printed section-by-section with a clear guide
showing where they must be positioned and in
images from Eduard (right) they look extremely
convincing. It will be best to apply them over a
layer of primer or paint – ideally gloss – so the
waterslide decals have a chance to cling on. Once
dry, normal model paints can then be applied over
them. A very exciting development and we hope
the range expands to include other aircraft kits
that come ‘rivet-free’ from the box.
Last issue we took a look at Eduard's new cockpit
set for Tamiya's F-14A Tomcat ‘late’ (the one
with a carrier-deck sheet and figure) and this
month we have an expanded set that includes
this cockpit plus engine nozzles, wheels/tyres
and 'remove before flight' tags too; an excellent
way to further enhance Tamiya's fantastic kit
(opposite page, top). Also arrived this month are
wheel upgrades for Tamiya’s Beaufighter 1:48
Mk.VI and Great Wall Hobby’s 1:48 F-15A/B Eagle

These are solvent cements for plastic models, with the glue evaporating after fixing
the parts together, and leaving no residue at all. The consistency is like water, and
therefore it flows between parts being joined. As with other similar solvents (eg.
MEK-based cements), it can be difficult to see where the glue has been placed, and
whether enough is present. These new products from AMMO have a dye added
– blue or red – which allows the modeller to see where the solvent has reached.
This is not just a gimmick, and turns out to be very useful at times. The only thing
to watch is where the model is covered with a thin layer of pale-coloured paint and
potentially the glue may show up through the paint layer. However, for the majority
of models, this coloured solvent cement will be a great benefit. The bottles contain
30ml of the cement, and are fitted with a long fine brush, allowing exact application
to fine parts. Overall, this has the potential to be a very useful product.
EURODECALS, UK
www.fantasyprintshop.co.uk
The waterslide decals that come with the majority of model kits use a layer of transparent
varnish over the designs to hold the fragile ink together during application; it's a tried-and-
tested process that works extremely well. But there is always room for improvement with
any production method and here, Fantasy Printshop of Cornwall, UK have created a new
type of decal that uses no varnish 'carrier film' at all, with the markings printed directly
on the glue-faced backing paper. Care must still be taken when handling them, as with any
decal, but these offer that holy grail of modelling effects, the 'painted-on' look. It’s a very
interesting development and we shall be giving them a try over the coming months.

MINIBASE, CHINA
www.minibase-hobby.com
The Su-27K Sea Flanker and Su-33 Flanker D are the Soviet/Russian Navy versions
2002
of the air force Flanker and both were released in 1:48 kit-form by Minibase to
much acclaim (we will bring you full-builds in time). As upgrades for their own
models, Minibase have also created sets of new undercarriage legs, produced
using 3D-printing technology and as you can see from the accompanying photos,
the results are quite simply breathtaking. The packs provide main and nose-legs,
all printed as single parts with the hydraulic lines formed integrally. As with most
complex 3D-print items, significant numbers of support structures will need to be
trimmed away, a task that must be carried out with great care to avoid damaging the
detail. Also included in each set is a pair of engine nozzles with phenomenal, double-
layered detail that will greatly improve the standard kit parts, which were very
good to begin with! These are just better. Absolutely incredible stuff that once again
proves just how uniquely useful this technology can be to scale modellers.

The Battle for France in 1940 was fought bravely by servicemen of many nations, but ultimately poor strategic
decisions allowed the German forces to cut the Allied armies in two, and the defeat of the land forces came
with brutal finality. The only real success, if an evacuation can be called as much, was saving the British
BEF and a very large number of French soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk. The French army held the
shrinking perimeter, while the ‘miracle of Dunkirk’ saw the escape of 340,000 troops, of whom 123,000
were French. The deteriorating situation, plus losses of British ships, resulted in some Allied troops being
left on French soil, including one in seven of the BEF. This 166-page softback book provides a clear
and readable account of the events leading up to the evacuation, and then treats each day from 26th
May to 4th June in turn, explaining how the transfer of troops gradually accelerated, particularly when
the smaller vessels got involved. The book is a collection of outstanding photos, some commonly
seen, but others ‘new’ in print. There are many pictures of wrecked ships and downed aircraft, but
the majority of images show the desperate and bedraggled troops, crowded onto boats, and quite
unlike Hollywood movies! There are numerous books on this subject, but this publication gathers all
of the information into a very useful and accessible coverage of this heroic episode. The only thing
missing would be some detailed maps of the area, marking where units, wrecks and structures
were located, but this does not diminish a fabulous resource on the evacuation. CLS
THE EIGHTY-EIGHT, A VISUAL HISTORY OF THE GERMAN 8.8CM FLAK GUNS IN WWII
DAVID DOYLE (2021), EMFOUR PUBLISHING COMPANY Inc.
www.daviddoylebooks.com
First published in 2008, this comprehensive treatment of the famous ‘88’ has been
significantly updated and corrected, to build upon the original book by incorporating
new information and some colour photos of museum guns. The book covers all of
the major weapons, including the Flak 18, Flak 36, Flak 37 and the Flak 41, with a
final coverage of searchlights and rangefinders. The format of the book is softback
landscape, with nearly 100 pages full of excellent photographs showing the sort of
details that modellers need. This book concentrates on the significant differences
between the different versions of the 88, but in amongst the photos there are
excellent pictures of the crew uniforms and styles of emplacements. The great
merit of this book by David Doyle is the collection of the necessary information
into one place, and this is a great reference for modellers and anyone
interested in the development and use of this weapon that terrified tanks and
aircraft in equal measure. CLS
