ERW 9 Fire precautions and means of egress

Duties and Responsibilities

1. To ensure good co-operation between the emergency teams (fire fighting and
first aid teams) and to co-ordinate all of these activities. Decide what reasonable
measures need to be implemented to prevent an emergency, taking into
account the size and construction of the workplace, location of the workplace,
number of employees, type and amount of flammable articles or substances,
and also ensure that all persons would react according to the emergency plan;

2. Once any emergency situation has been reported, you will immediately arrange
communication with the rest of the emergency team, i.e. fire fighter, first aider
and where applicable evacuation co-ordinator in order to decide on a plan of
action;

3. The emergency team must, immediately, decide whether any help is required
from emergency services teams, or S.A.P.S you must personally ensure that
such services are contacted and that appropriate directions are given;

4. As an emergency co-ordinator you must co-ordinate the activities of the various

emergency teams, i.e. fire fighting, first aid and emergency evacuation teams
and

5. You will continuously keep management informed of any progress, new

developments or difficulties experienced to effectively deal with the situation.

During an emergency situation and simulated exercises, take full control of the
workplace and all the persons on the premises, at that time, will be under your direct
control.
