Sample Paper 14
Class X Exam 2022-23
English-Language and Literature (184)
Time Allowed : 3 Hrs. Maximum Marks: 80
General Instructions:
1. 15-minute prior reading time allotted for Q-paper reading.
2. The Question Paper contains THREE sections READING, GRAMMAR & WRITING and LITERATURE.
3. Attempt question based on specific instructions for each part.

SECTION A- READING SKILLS 20

I. Read the passage given below. 10

1. Till 1988, the Pamban Bridge was the only surface transport that connected Tamil Nadu’s island of
Rameswaram to the mainland. Said to be an engineering marvel, the Pamban Bridge was once India’s
longest sea bridge, till the Bandra-Worli sea link came up in 2009. What makes Pamban Bridge more
wonderful is that it was built more than 100 years ago.
2. The 2.057 km long bridge, also known as Bridge No. 346 in Indian Railway reference, consists of over
140 spans. The amazing feature of a double-leaf section that can be raised to allow movement of ships
and boats was designed by German engineer Scherzer. The 114th span, midway along the bridge, is
called the Scherzer span.
3. Interestingly, the Scherzer span is now being replaced by a modern one to improve the life of the bridge.
Pamban Bridge is a cantilever bridge, that has structures that project horizontally into space, supported
only on one end.
4. Until recently, the two leaves of the bridge were opened manually using levers by workers, says Indian
Railways. Following cyclone-induced tragic train accident in 1964, Indian Railways installed devices to
check the wind velocity across the Pamban via duct. Train movement on the bridge is halted when the
wind speed exceeds 58 kmph.
5. The construction of the Pamban Bridge began in 1911 and it was opened in 1914. It was only in 2007
that the railway line on Pamban Bridge was converted from metre-gauge to broad-gauge.
6. According to Indian Railways, the famed Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram and the Pamban
Bridge draw scores of foreign tourists and inland pilgrims to the island.
7. Even as Indian Railways’ Pamban Bridge continues to be an engineering marvel, yet another railway
bridge that is likely to be a stunning site is coming up in Jammu and Kashmir. Said to be the world’s
highest railway bridge, the Chenab bridge, is set to be completed by 2019. The bridge will be taller than
Paris’ famous Eiffel Tower and is being built to withstand earthquakes.
8. Yet another bridge that will be a landmark is the Bogibeel Bridge - India’s longest rail-cum-road bridge.
The Bogibeel double-deck bridge is being built over the Brahmaputra in the Dibrugarh district of Assam
and will connect the North and South banks of the river. The total length of the rail-cum-road bridge will
be 4.9 km.

II. Read the passage given below. 10

1. The Arctic is warming more than twice as fast as the rest of the world, and some scientists believe that
thawing permafrost ground frozen since the last Ice Age - is about to release enormous amounts of
climate-warming emissions. In the coldest regions of planet Earth, ice binds together soil, rock, sand and
organic matter. This layer of permafrost can begin just centimeters below the Earth’s surface. Anywhere
cold enough to keep the ground frozen year-round for at least two years counts as permafrost. About a
quarter of the Northern Hemisphere contains permafrost.

2. Warmer temperatures in the Arctic are causing snow and ice to disappear. As ice covering the sea
shrinks back, it exposes darker waters that absorb solar radiation rather than reflecting it back out in
the atmosphere. This is called the albedo effect, and helps explain why the Arctic region is warming so
much faster than the rest of the world. This chart shows how much average surface air temperatures have
changed at different latitudes since 1960.
3. The Siberian Arctic town of Verkhoyansk in June registered a record high temperature of 38 degrees
Celsius (100.4 Fahrenheit) during a prolonged heat wave. Record fires have also engulfed vast swathes
of Siberian Russia, emitting more carbon dioxide than Switzerland or Norway in a year.
4. The boreal forests of the Arctic have evolved to survive and thrive from occasional fires that would
naturally occur every few decades or centuries in the region. But the more recent fires are different,
scientists say. They are starting months earlier than they ever have before, and are smoldering through
the winter as underground ‘zombie fires’.

5. The more intense fires are also burning up peat bogs. A forest might grow back in a few decades and
reabsorb the carbon it released when it burned; a peat bog is the accumulation of thousands of years of
partial decomposition.
6. The best way to prevent permafrost from thawing is to limit climate change by reducing fossil fuel
emissions and protecting forests, scientists say. But once permafrost thaws, there’s nothing that can be
done to stop the carbon from being released.
Based on your understanding of the passage, answer the questions given below.
i. Infer one reason for the following, based on information in Paragraph 2.
The Arctic region is warming so much faster than the rest of the world.

Sample Paper 15
Class X Exam 2022-23
English-Language and Literature (184)
Time Allowed : 3 Hrs. Maximum Marks: 80
General Instructions:
1. 15-minute prior reading time allotted for Q-paper reading.
2. The Question Paper contains THREE sections READING, GRAMMAR & WRITING and LITERATURE.
3. Attempt question based on specific instructions for each part.

SECTION A- READING SKILLS 20

I. Read the passage given below. 10

1. Social media sites serve as a platform to connect with our friends and relatives. We share our happiness
as well as sad moments on social media platforms to let those on our friend list know how we are feeling
and what we are doing in life. People ‘like’ our status updates, and photographs and comments on them
to tell us how they feel about it all. This is a great way to socialise in this busy world. It makes us feel
that everyone we love and want to be in touch with, is just a click away. However, social media becomes
a problem when we get addicted to it.
2. Many people living in different parts of the world are suffering from social media addiction and are
bearing their consequences too. Social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter may help us connect
with our distant relatives and long-lost friends, but social media addiction is distancing us from our
immediate family and close friends. People addicted to social media are hooked to these platforms for
hours. They do not care if their loved ones are sitting with them or trying to make a conversation. All
they care about is who updated what on social media and how many people liked or commented on their
posts.
3. Social media addicts frequently check updates and notifications on social media platforms. This can be
as frequent as twenty-thirty times in an hour. Viewing a new notification, especially one involving their
posts gives them a high. Lack of it, on the other hand, can make them feel sad and depressed.
4. All that the social media addicts care about is to maintain an attractive social media profile. They are mostly
seen clicking pictures during social events, family gatherings and even during getaways with friends. They
hardly enjoy the moment or talk to the people around them. They are either focused on collecting pictures
that can be uploaded on their social media accounts or are found busy checking and commenting on the
status updates of those on their friend lists.
5. They post updates stating they are enjoying with their family or having fun with their friends, while in
reality, they do not even interact properly with anyone around. This is the grave reality of social media
addicts. Social media addiction is becoming a big problem. It is ironic how a platform created to help
people socialise is actually cutting them off from society.

1. The protests against police brutality and systemic racism have seen several American and international
celebrities donate to U.S. nonprofits and organizations dedicated to racial justice. On June 5, racial
justice organization Black Lives Matter confirmed it had received a $1 million donation from South
Korean pop group BTS and its record label, Big Hit Entertainment.
2. Shortly after the news became public, BTS fans organized an online campaign to match the donation
under the hashtag #MatchAMillion and reached their goal in just 25 hours.
3. K-pop fans are known for their prolific social media activity and have used their influence to support
social justice issues. On Instagram and Twitter, they have taken over white supremacist hashtags with
fancams – short videos of their favourite pop idols performing. When the Dallas Police Department
asked the public to submit videos of “illegal activity” during protests to its iWatch Dallas app, fans
encouraged each other to submit fancams instead, and the app went temporarily offline. More recently,
fans were credited alongside TikTok-using teenagers for registering en masse for tickets for President
Trump’s rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but not attending.

1. Yuri Gagarin was the first man to travel into space. The Russian scientists were ready to send up a man
into space, and they chose Major Yuri Gagarin to be the first pilot.
2. He had to go through a long and difficult period of training, since he would have to carry out many
scientific experiments during his journey, and had also to know as much as possible about the rocket in
which he was to fly. He would be taking great risks, for it was impossible to tell just what the effects of
travelling in space would be. If anything went wrong with the rocket, Gagarin would be certain to lose
his life. However, Gagarin was ready for any risk, and quickly learned all that he needed to know. On
April 12th, 1961, his spaceship, the Vostok, was ready, and the great adventure began.
3. Flying a spaceship is not the same as flying an ordinary aircraft. Instead of sitting at the controls, the
pilot lies flat upon a couch; and the take-off is mainly automatic, though the pilot must always be
ready in case anything goes wrong. Fortunately, all went well; the Vostok was launched by its powerful
motors, and before long it was more than 100 miles up, travelling at a speed of 5 miles a second or
18,000 mph-faster than any man had travelled before. Gagarin did not feel any sensation of speed, but
he could look through the porthole of his pressurized cabin and see the Earth far below, looking like a
vast globe instead of a flat plain. He could make out coastlines, rivers, forests, and clouds; he passed
over Siberia, then on to South America, and then over Africa.
4. Gagarin was busy all the time making scientific measurements. Also, as the Vostok was equipped with
radio, he was able to give the scientists on the ground a running commentary on everything he saw
before long the spaceship passed into the earth’s shadow. When it came out of the shadow again, the
horizon glowed a brilliant orange colour. In space, the sky looked black even when in the sunlight, as
Gagarin had expected it to look. It is only from the Earth that the sky looks blue; it is not really blue.
5. When Gagarin had been in space for rather over an hour, he had nearly completed a journey right round
the Earth, and it was time to prepare for the landing. This was perhaps the most dangerous part of the
whole trip. If he came into the air too quickly, his ship would rub against the air particles, and the friction
would make the ship so hot that it would burn up. The speed of the Vostok had to be checked gradually.

Again, all went well. The outer hull of the ship did become hot, but not too hot. The Vostok steadily
dropped closer and closer to the ground until, when not far from the ground, Gagarin’s cabin was
separated from the rest of the rocket; a huge parachute opened, and the cabin, with Gagarin in it, floated
gently down to a safe landing. Two women working in the fields saw him, and came running up. As they
drew near, Gagarin opened the door of his cabin and climbed through, his journey over. He had been up
for 108 minutes, during which time he had flown right round the world.
Based on your understanding of the passage, answer the questions given below.

i. How did Gagarin prepare for the space flight?

(a) By getting physically fit.
(b) By collecting enough money.
(c) By going through difficult training.
(d) By studying science.

ii. What is the biggest difference between flying a spaceship and flying an aircraft?
(a) The pilot has to lie on his back.
(b) The spacecraft is much faster.
(c) Flying the spacecraft is more difficult.
(d) Flying the spacecraft is more dangerous.

iii. What all did Gagarin experience while sitting in the spaceship Vostok?
(a) He experienced sensation of speed.
(b) He made out coastlines, rivers, forests and clouds.
(c) Both (a) and (b)
(d) He could not look through the porthole of his cabin.

iv. Complete the following with a phrase from paragraph 5.

Landing was perhaps the most dangerous part of the whole journey as _____.

v. Which was the most dangerous part of the trip?

(a) The time of take-off
(b) When the spaceship passed into the earth’s shadow
(c) The time of landing
(d) When the spaceship comes out of the earth’s shadow

II. Read the passage given below. 10

1. Overall global handset profits declined 11% YoY to USD 12 billion in Q3 2019 due to an increased mix
of entry to mid-tier products and a fall in revenues for key smartphone OEMs.
2. Apple dominates the global handset market by capturing 66% of industry profits and 32% of the overall
handset revenue. The loyal premium user base in the major markets like the USA, EU and Japan is one
of the reasons that Apple can still operate at a profit level that its competitors can only wish for. Now
with a strong service strategy, Apple’s overall ecosystem is strong enough to guarantee it a steady inflow
of revenue in the coming years. In the immediate future, we believe that Apple’s profit for the holiday
season will increase with the new line up of iPhones gaining good traction.

3. Samsung is a distant second, taking 17% of the overall handset Industry profits. The increased mix
of Galaxy A Series along with the positive start of Galaxy Note 10 Series was the key reason for the
growth.
4. Chinese smartphone brands operate at low-profit margins, but better than in previous years, even
though they are expanding outside China and also penetrating high-tier price bands. Chinese brands
offer attractive propositions to mature smartphone users with new feature-packed flagships at affordable
prices. Some of these Chinese brands are also now looking at monetizing their userbase by launching
services like financial services, IoT products and others. However, it is becoming a challenge for Chinese
brands to increase their smartphone ASPs and margins due to a combination of longer consumer holding
periods and Apple lowering pricing on some key SKUs, which has limited the headroom that Chinese
vendors had used to increase their ASPs.
5. In coming quarters, the adoption of 5G will drive some upgrades. This will likely lead to revenue growth
for OEMs which are already preparing themselves ahead of full 5G commercialisation.

Sample Paper 17
Class X Exam 2022-23
English-Language and Literature (184)
Time Allowed : 3 Hrs. Maximum Marks: 80
General Instructions:
1. 15-minute prior reading time allotted for Q-paper reading.
2. The Question Paper contains THREE sections READING, GRAMMAR & WRITING and LITERATURE.
3. Attempt question based on specific instructions for each part.

SECTION A- READING SKILLS 20

I. Read the passage given below. 10

1. Detachment is not physically renouncing our possessions, profession, home and family as many of
us think. It is the ability to let go of all the desires, habits, emotions, thoughts, speech and behaviour
patterns that are negative or detrimental to our well-being in any way. Detachment and discrimination
are interdependent; they mutually strengthen each other and empower us. The more we are able to
discriminate, the more we are able to segregate our harmful desires and discard them. The more mental
trash we discard this way, the more we empower our faculty of discrimination.
2. There is a simple technique we can all practise to strengthen our discrimination and detachment and get
rid of unnecessary desires. This will generate the awareness we need to control our senses and mind and
make them stop churning out desires every moment. To practise this technique, we should select a quiet
place when we have some leisure time.
3. Sit down with a few sheets of paper and pen or a computer and make two lists. In the first list, understand
and write down your most important goal or agenda in this life. Then meticulously add all the other goals
that you would like to achieve. While you make this list, you shouldn’t think only about yourself. Include
what you would like to contribute to the welfare of your dependents, children and their forthcoming
generations.
4. Once you complete this, set it aside and begin the second list. List all your desires here. They may be
big or small, important or insignificant, right or wrong, demonic or divine. Just remove the lid on the
Pandora’s Box and allow them all to spill out freely. Don’t try to censor or edit the list of desires at this
stage. Complete the list first. After you have made an exhaustive list, go over it to see which of these
desires are truly necessary, conducive to your meditation, helpful and favourable to you and beneficial
to others.
5. If you have been serious and honest in doing this exercise, you will have long lists of goals and desires
and many of them may be selfish or detrimental to your goal of meditation, visualisation, self-realisation,
peace, happiness and bliss. This exercise will help you develop frankness and honesty with yourself.
You will touch your true feelings and bring many of your hidden ambitions and desires into the open.

Sample Paper 18
Class X Exam 2022-23
English-Language and Literature (184)
Time Allowed : 3 Hrs. Maximum Marks: 80
General Instructions:
1. 15-minute prior reading time allotted for Q-paper reading.
2. The Question Paper contains THREE sections READING, GRAMMAR & WRITING and LITERATURE.
3. Attempt question based on specific instructions for each part.

SECTION A- READING SKILLS 20

I. Read the passage given below. 10
1. Meditation has become a mainstream activity in many parts of the world. Though the main reason to
meditate is for spiritual awareness, there are additional benefits from learning to focus our attention within.
One of these is the healing it brings about in our physical bodies. Over the past few decades, doctors and
scientists have been studying the body-mind connection and its relationship to physical health. Medical
research has indicated a link between certain illnesses and our state of mind and emotional condition.
2. It has been found that when we undergo mental stress, emotional pain or depression, our physical
resistance to disease drops. We become more susceptible to catching a disease because our ability to
keep our immune system in top working order decreases.
3. Science has pinpointed that certain diseases such as digestive problems, breathing problems, heart
disease, and migraine headaches, to name a few, may sometimes be caused due to stress. Thus, we arrive
at the possibility that by reducing stress in our lives, we can improve our physical health and well-being.
4. To begin to explore this possibility, it is imperative to understand the root cause of stress in our lives. In
this hectic and fast-paced world, we are constantly being bombarded with information, and stimuli.
5. Life has become increasingly complicated. With competing priorities, family and social obligations,
increasing responsibilities, and looming deadlines, people seem to have too much to do and not enough
time to do it. We hold jobs that require long hours and too much responsibility.
6. Medical research has shown that meditation, the process of taking our attention away from the stresses
and strains of the outer world, and focusing it within ourselves, can help reduce stress in our lives. In
doing so, it can reduce our chances of developing a stress-related illness.
7. When we meditate on the inner light and sound of God, we come in contact with God’s love within us,
which fills us with inner peace, joy, bliss and happiness. This experience takes our attention away from
the stresses and pains of the outer world. As we spend time in meditation, we create a calm haven in
which we restore equilibrium and peace to our mental functioning.
8. Researchers have recorded that the brain activity in people who meditate reflects a state of deep relaxation.
Their mind becomes calmer. The tranquil effect of meditation lasts beyond the time spent in meditation.
The carry-over effect helps us maintain peace of mind as we continue our activities throughout the day.

9. We become more in control of our reactions and maintain an even keel in the face of conflict, or in the
midst of turmoil and strife. It also gives us a private retreat of bliss and peace within us that we can

gives us another mechanism by which we can reduce stress in our lives.

Based on your understanding of the passage, answer the questions given below.

i. Why has meditation become a mainstream activity in many parts of the world?

(b) Because it gives us a private retreat of bliss and peace

II. Read the passage given below. 10

1. Our history makes it evident that the Indian Plastics Industry made a vigorous beginning in 1957, but it
took more than 30 years for it to pervade Indian lifestyles. In 1979, the market for plastic was just being
seeded by the state-owned Indian Petrochemicals and it was only in 1994 that plastic soft drink bottles
became a visible source of annoyance.
2. In the same year, people in other cities were concerned about the state of public sanitation and also urged
regulatory bodies to ban the production, distribution and use of plastic bags. However, the challenge was
greater than it appeared at first.
3. The massive generation of plastic waste in India is due to rapid urbanisation, spread of retail chains,
plastic packaging from grocery to food and vegetable products, to consumer items and cosmetics. The
projected high growth rates of GDP and continuing rapid urbanisation suggests that India’s trajectory of
plastic consumption and plastic waste is likely to increase.

4. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Report of 2018, India stands among
few other countries like France, Mongolia and several African countries that have initiated total or
partial national level bans on plastics in their jurisdictions. On World Environment Day in 2018, India
vowed to phase out single-use plastics by 2022, which gave a much-needed impetus to bring this change.
5. In this context, thereafter, ten states (Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh,
Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Odisha, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu) are currently sending
their collected waste to cement plants for co-processing. Twelve other states/UTs are using plastic
waste for polymer bitumen road construction and still four other states are using the plastic waste for
waste-to-energy plants and oil production. A world of greater possibilities has now opened up to initiate
appropriate and concrete actions to build up the necessary institutions and systems before oceans turn,
irreversibly, into a thin soup of plastic.
6. However, there is no one single masterstroke to counter the challenges witnessed by the staggering
plastic waste management in the country. The time is now to formulate robust and inclusive National
Action Plans, and while doing so, the country will establish greater transparency to combat the plastic
jeopardy in a more sustainable and holistic way.
Based on your understanding of the passage, answer the questions given below.

i. Infer one reason for the following, based on the information given in paragraph 6.
The country will establish greater transparency to combat the plastic jeopardy in a more sustainable and
holistic way.

1. The colour of animals is by no means a matter of chance; it depends on many considerations, but in the
majority of cases tends to protect the animal from danger by rendering it less conspicuous. Perhaps it
may be said that if colouring is mainly protective, there ought to be but few brightly coloured animals.
There are, however, not a few cases in which vivid colours are themselves protective. The kingfisher
itself, though so brightly coloured, is by no means easy to see. The blue harmonises with the water, and
the bird as it darts along the stream looks almost like a flash of sunlight.
2. Desert animals are generally the colour of the desert. Thus, for instance, the lion, the antelope, and the
wild donkey are all sand-coloured. “Indeed,” says Canon Tristram, “in the desert, where neither trees,
brushwood, nor even undulation of the surface afford the slightest protection to its foes, a modification of
colour assimilated to that of the surrounding country is absolutely necessary. Hence, without exception,
the upper plumage of every bird, and also the fur of all the smaller mammals and the skin of all the
snakes and lizards, is of one uniform sand colour.”
3. The next point is the colour of the mature caterpillars, some of which are brown. This probably makes
the caterpillar even more conspicuous among the green leaves than would otherwise be the case. Let us
see, then, whether the habits of the insect will throw any light upon the riddle. What would you do if
you were a big caterpillar? Why, like most other defenceless creatures, you would feed by night, and lie
concealed by day. So do these caterpillars. When the morning light comes, they creep down the stem of
the food plant, and lie concealed among the thick herbage and dry sticks and leaves, near the ground,
and it is obvious that under such circumstances, the brown colour really becomes a protection. It might
indeed be argued that the caterpillars, having become brown, concealed themselves on the ground, and
that we were reversing the state of things. But this is not so, because, while we may say as a general
rule that large caterpillars feed by night and lie concealed by day, it is by no means always the case that
they are brown; some of them still retaining the green colour. We may then conclude that the habit of
concealing themselves by day came first, and that the brown colour is a later adaptation.

Sample Paper 20
Class X Exam 2022-23
English-Language and Literature (184)
Time Allowed : 3 Hrs. Maximum Marks: 80
General Instructions:
1. 15-minute prior reading time allotted for Q-paper reading.
2. The Question Paper contains THREE sections READING, GRAMMAR & WRITING and LITERATURE.
3. Attempt question based on specific instructions for each part.

SECTION A- READING SKILLS 20

I. Read the passage given below. 10
1. It is rare to find someone with good technical and communication skills. You can get far ahead of your
colleagues if you combine the two early in your career. People will judge, evaluate, promote or block
you based on your communication skills. Since habits form by repeating both good and bad forms of
communication, learn to observe great communicators and adopt their styles and traits—in written and
verbal forms. The art of listening and learning from each and every interaction, is another secret recipe.
Develop the subconscious habit of listening to yourself as you speak and know when to pause.
2. Learning what not to say is probably more important than learning what to say. As your career develops,
you will realise that the wise speak less. Speak when you have value to add, else refrain. Poorly
constructed emails with grammatical errors are acceptable between friends, but they should be seriously
avoided while communicating formally with your seniors. Avoid any communication in an emotional
state when you might say things you will regret later. One unnecessary word uttered at the wrong time
or place can ruin a relationship, career or even your life. Such is the power of words. If such a thing
happens, you should immediately apologise, else it may haunt you for life.
3. Another problem to overcome is speaking too fast. Since our minds work faster than our speech, we are
inclined to speak fast. This does not necessarily mean that the person hearing it will get it any faster. On
the contrary, it is always the reverse. So slow down, and think before you speak. “When I get ready to
speak to people,” Abraham Lincoln said, “I spend two-thirds of the time thinking what they want to hear
and one-third thinking what I want to say.” Adding humour and wit is also essential. But realise that not
all jokes are funny and observe certain boundaries. Never say anything that could offend. Remember
you are not a comedian who must offend as many people as you can to be witty.
Based on your understanding of the passage, answer the questions given below.
i. What does the author prefer more over what to say? (Paragraph 2)
(a) To listen to the best orators
(b) To listen to political leaders
(c) To learn formal communication

It suggests that :
(a) it’s important to incorporate some humour while you speak
(b) it’s imperative to reflect wit when you address the gathering
