Personal History Statement
Born in north-eastern China in 2001, I found my musical talent at age of 5. With a resounding voice of
clarity and a remarkable vocal range, my innate ability to grasp melody nuances sets me apart.
Recognizing this gift, I started formal musical training thereafter and in 2008, I won a gold medal at the
national-level “8th Dandelion Cup Youth Outstanding New Artist Competition” in Beijing. Passionate
about singing and instrument-playing, I joined the university choir and served as the vice president,
organizing music shows around Victoria Harbor in Hong Kong and conducting university level singing
competition.
In addition to music, I am also interested in science and research. Growing up with a father who holds a
bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at Wu Han University and works as a senior lecturer, my
childhood was immersed in a strong atmosphere of science and technology. I enjoyed observing daily
physical phenomenon and having stimulating conversations with him on math and physical problems.
Having participated in the Olympiad Competition of math and physics at high school, and won the second
class at the provincial level, I found my interest increasingly drawn to these subjects and pursued a major
in Electrical Engineering and minor in Applied Mathematics at university.
Driven by my interest in physics, I focused my first research project in PolyU on hollow-core fiber gas
sensor. Through this project, I realized that compared with physical theorem, signal processing and
algorithms are more academically appealing to me. Delving deeper into the filed, I decided to specialize
in deep learning. To enhance my understanding of relevant theorem and applications, I participated in
various projects. These include the Robot Learning Summer Camp focusing on robot vision and human
robot interaction, Computing Summer Workshop at NUS on time-series forecasting and fintech theorem,
and my final year project which looked at federated learning and model personalization techniques.
Currently working as a research assistant at CUHK, I am researching on computer vision and medical
image analysis. Having seen the suffering of patients during COVID-19 pandemic, I aspire to help more
people and promote their well-being by applying my knowledge in artificial intelligence and medical
image analysis.
Loving, giving and determined to pursue my PhD studies, I genuinely hope your school could provide
me with an opportunity to flourish further in academia, and your graduate program will benefit me a lot
by training and challenging me to realize my dream to be a lifelong researcher.
