This past semester I was able
to bond and connecte with the students in my 1st grade class! I established from the beginning that I was there to talk with the students about what they wanted to talk about as well as help them with anything they needed. I did my best to check in with every student at the beginning of the class and ask them what they did over the weekend or how their days have been. It was important to me that I showed them I wanted to hear about their lives and share excitement with them. One thing that I also did that I think helped to establish respect and inclusion was when students would show negative behavior I would reiterate that I was there to help and I did not need to help. I would ask if they would like my help and then if they started to get rowdy or joke around I would redirect and ask them to show me they were ready to work and would like my help. It was important to me to establish that I expected respect to go both ways. I also made sure to use all the kids names when talking to them and I would get on their level. I believe I have learned a lot of new tools to support and nurture the students around me and I have built up a lot of confidence this semester with being able to connect with all children!
