MAT 102 - QUIZ # 2 PREP

Instructions

Please use these questions to prepare for Quiz #2. In addition to these problems, work on as many
of the “Week 3 Problems” and “Week 4 Problems” as possible. (You can find these problems posted
in the corresponding weekly guides on the course page.)

Remember, you must fully explain/justify your answers to all questions in this course, unless otherwise
instructed!

Assigned Questions

(1) Consider the function f : R \ {−1} → R given by f (x) = . Find the image of f and prove
x+1
your claim.

(2) Consider the function f : N × N → Q given by f (x, y) = . Find the image of f and prove
y+1
your claim.

(3) Let F be a field. Without looking up the proofs from the book, or notes from class/TUT prove
that the additive and multiplicative inverses in a field are unique.

(4) Prove “cancellation” for fields (without looking up the proofs):

(a) For all x, y, z ∈ F, if x + z = y + z, then x = y.

(b) For all x, y, z ∈ F \ {0}, if x · z = y · z, then x = y.

(5) Let F = {0, 1, a, b} be a field with 4 elements. Prove that if 1 + 1 = 0, then a + b = 1.

(6) Let F be a field and x ∈ F. Prove that −(−x) = x.

(7) Let F be a field. Prove that (−1) · x = −x.

(8) Let P = “(∀x ∈ R)(∃y ∈ R)(x

h + y > 0)”. i
Let Q = “(∀x ∈ R)(∀y ∈ R) (xy > x) ∨ (xy < y) ”.

(a) Is P true? Justify your answer.

(b) Is Q true? Justify your answer.

(c) Let R be any statement. Is (P ∧ Q) =⇒ R true? Justify your answer.

(9) Let F be a field. Write each of the field axioms using logical symbols (and common notation
for sets, like ∈).

(10) Let E denote the set of even integers, and O denote the set of odd integers.

(a) Let P = “ Every integer is either even or odd.”

Write P using logic symbols (and common notation for sets, like ∈, Z, N, Q etc).

(b) Let Q = “ There is an integer m so that for any integer n, n · m is even.”
Write Q using logical symbols (and common notation for sets, like ∈, Z, N, Q etc).
(c) Is Q true? Prove your claim.
(d) Let R = “ There exists an integer which is both even and odd.”
Write P using logic symbols (and common notation for sets, like ∈, Z, N, Q etc).
(e) Is the statement R =⇒ ¬Q true or false? Prove your claim.

(11) hLet P, Q, R be mathematical

i h istatements. Prove that if P is false, then the statement
P =⇒ (Q ∧ R) ∧ ¬P ∨ Q is true.
