Assessment is a process of gathering and evaluating information or evidence to make judgments or

decisions about someone's knowledge, skills, abilities, or performance. It plays a crucial role in
education, psychology, and various other fields. There are three main types of assessment: assessment
as, of, and for learning.

1. Assessment as Learning: This type of assessment involves students actively engaging in the
assessment process to develop their own understanding and monitor their progress. It focuses on self-
reflection, self-assessment, and self-regulation. Students are encouraged to set goals, reflect on their
learning, and make adjustments to improve their performance. Assessment as learning promotes
metacognitive skills and helps students become independent learners.

2. Assessment of Learning: This type of assessment is typically used to measure students' achievement
or performance at the end of a learning period, such as a unit, course, or program. It is often summative
in nature and aims to evaluate students' knowledge, skills, and understanding against predetermined
standards or criteria. Assessment of learning provides feedback on students' overall performance and
helps determine their grades, promotions, or certifications.

3. Assessment for Learning: This type of assessment is used to support and enhance the learning
process. It involves gathering information about students' progress and understanding during instruction
to provide timely and constructive feedback. Assessment for learning helps teachers identify students'
strengths and weaknesses, tailor instruction to meet their needs, and guide their future learning. It
focuses on formative assessment strategies, such as quizzes, observations, and feedback, to inform
instructional decisions and promote student growth.

Overall, these three types of assessment work together to support effective teaching and learning.
Assessment as learning empowers students to take ownership of their learning, assessment of learning
provides a summary of achievement, and assessment for learning guides instruction and promotes
continuous improvement.
