LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 6

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the Grade 6 students must be able to:
 Understand the concept of fractions and mixed numbers.
 Add fractions with like denominators and unlike denominators using equivalent fractions.
 Add mixed numbers by converting them into improper fractions.
 Solve real-life problems involving the addition of fractions.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: Addition of Fractions and Mixed Numbers
Skills: Adding fractions and mixed numbers
Solving real-life problems involving the addition of fractions.
Values: Understanding, Accuracy, and Patience
Materials: Visual aids, chalks/ marker, eraser, fraction circles
Reference: Math for Smart Learners 6 book, Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs),
Internet.
III. PROCEDURE
DAY 1
A. PRIMING ACTIVITY
a. Prayer
b. Greetings
c. Classroom Management
d. Checking of Attendance
e. Recall

 Please recall what is a fraction.

● Who can give examples of fractions?
f. Motivation
 Fraction Farm https://www.roomrecess.com/games/FractionFarm/play.html
The class will play the Fraction Farm

B. LESSON PROPER
1. Activity
● Math Investigation
You are the cook at the canteen of an elementary school in your town. The
school principal has asked you to cook pork sinigang, pork kaldereta, and pork
adobo for a school celebration. Here is the list of ingredients that you need to
buy.
Pork sinigang : ½ kg of pork and 1/8 kg of gabi
Pork kaldereta: ¾ kg of pork, 1/8 kg of potatoes, and ¼ kg of carrots
Pork adobo: ¾ kg of pork and ¼ kg of potatoes

Solve for the total amount of ingredients that you will need.

Questions:
What are the common ingredients in the list?
What is the sum of common ingredients?
2. Analysis
● How did you get the sum of each ingredient?
● Have you encountered improper fractions? What did you do after?
3. Abstraction

● Addition of Fractions and Mixed Numbers without Regrouping

In adding similar fractions, add the numerators and just copy the common denominator.

Example:
5 1 5+1 6 1
+ = = ∨
12 12 12 12 2

In adding a fraction and a mixed number, see if the fraction and the fractional part of
the number are similar fractions. Write the whole number of the mixed number. Then
add the numerators of the fractions and copy the denominator.

(Show and explain Example 1 from the book on page 4.)

In adding dissimilar fractions, convert the fractions first to similar fractions. You
can also find their equivalent fractions with the same denominator to make
them similar fractions.

(Show and explain examples 2 and 3 from the book on pages 5-6)

● Addition of Fractions and Mixed Numbers with Regrouping

Regrouping in fractions is done when the sum of the fractional parts of mixed
numbers is greater than one.

(Show and explain Examples 4 and 5 from the book on pages 7-8.)
DAY 2
A. PRIMING ACTIVITY
a. Prayer
b. Greetings
c. Classroom Management
d. Checking of Attendance
e. Recall
● Who can give examples of fractions and mixed numbers?
f.Motivation
Circle the pizzas that match the fractions.

● Solving Word Problems involving Addition of Fractions and Mixed Numbers

There are steps used in solving word problems involving the addition of
fractions.
Use the acronym APPS in solving these word problems.

4. Application
Fraction Relay

Divide the class into 3 teams. Each team has a set of fraction cards with like and unlike
denominators. The first student in each team runs to the board, adds the first two cards,
and writes the answer. They then run back and tap the next student who does the same.
The team that finishes first wins.
