Section A [45 marks]

Answer all questions.

1. The following cumulative frequency table shows the distribution for the mass of 75 parcels
received at a post office in a day.
Mass (kg) Cumulative frequency
< 1.5 0
<2.5 5
<3.5 15
<4.5 29
<5.5 49
<6.5 67
<7.5 75

Given that the median for the mass of the parcels is 4.925kg
a) Calculate the mean and standard deviation for the mass of the parcel. [5 marks]
b) Hence, find the Pearson’s coefficient of skewness and interpret your answer. [2 marks]

2. Given A and B are two events such that and

a) Find [2 marks]

b) Find and hence, calculate . [5 marks]

3. In a given manufacturing process, component are rejected if they have a particular dimension
greater than 31.32 cm or less than 26.03 cm. It is found that 3% are rejected as being too large
and 5% are rejected as being too small. If the dimension is normally distributed, of the
distribution of the dimension,
a) find the mean and standard deviation, correct to 1 decimal place. [7 marks]
b) find the probability that a component’s dimension is at least 31 cm. [3 marks]

4. A new brand of coffee powder is being tested in the market. It is believed that 60% of
consumers will like the new coffee. A sample of 50 consumers taste-tested the new coffee.
a) Find the standard error of the proportion for this sample. [3 marks]
b) Calculate the probability that at least 75% of consumers will like the coffee. [3 marks]
5. An institute conducts a study of annual number of kilowatt-hours used by various homes
appliances. It is claimed that an air conditioner uses an average of 520 kWh of electricity per
year. A random sample of 50 homes indicates that an air conditioner uses an average of 495
kWh of electricity per year with a standard deviation of 132 kWh. At the 5% level of
significance, test whether an air conditioner's annual electrical usage is less than 520 kWh
considering that it is normally distributed. [7 marks]

6. A researcher investigates a belief that a person's skin reaction when exposed to ultra-violet
light is related to the person's eye colour. A person's eye colour and its skin reaction of 200
randomly selected people are recorded as follows:

Eye Colour
Brown Blue Others
None 22 28 17
Skin Mild 41 25 8
reaction Strong 33 7 19

Use a chi-squared test to test, at the 5% significance level, that skin reaction to ultra-violet
light is independent of person’s eye colour. [8 marks]
Section B [15 marks]
Answer one question only.

7. The continuous random variable X is such that

a) Show that P(X > 1) = . [3 marks]

b) Find the probability density function of X, and hence find E(X). [6 marks]
c) 108 independent observations are taken of X.
The number of observations greater than 1 is denoted by R. Using a suitable
approximation, find P(24 < R < 40) [6 marks]

8. A random sample of 80 observations obtained from a population produce the following results:

and
a) Calculate unbiased estimate for the population mean and variance. [3 marks]
b) Determine a 95% confidence interval for the population mean. [4 marks]
c) Use the above sample information to test, at the 5% significant level,
vs . [6 marks]
d) Explain the relationship between the confidence interval obtained in part (b) and the
result of the test in part (c). [2 marks]
