SKELTON NEWS
Facebook: St Giles Church, Skelton, York
Volunteers needed to help distribute the Parish Newsletter in
Skelton. We need some more people to deliver the paper copies of
the newsletter to homes in Skelton. If you can give about an hour of
your time around the start of each month to deliver to a street near
you then please contact Marion Martin on 01904 470676. Thank

Skelton Parish Council Next meeting is on Thursday 26th
October 2023 in Skelton Village Hall at 7:30pm and subsequently
on 23rd November. A Christmas party will be held on 9th Dec.
St. Giles Opening: Daily between 10:00am and 4:00pm.
Skelton Gardening Club: The Gardening Club meet every 3rd
Thursday at 2pm in the village hall. Our next meeting is on 19th
October when Eileen Shone will talk on 'Bulbs All Year Round.' We
are a friendly group who welcome new members and visitors. For

Skelton Walking Group: Meet on the village green on Saturday
2nd September at 9.30am for a 6 mile walk. Picnic lunch required.

Mandy’s Community Café We are open for coffee & lunches from
10:30am until 1:30pm 1st Friday of the month. Come and enjoy a
warm place with good company, good food & drinks and good
books. If you are unable to make your own way to the Village Hall,

Skelton Social Running Group A casual running group meets on
Tuesday nights, 6.30pm at the green on St. Catherine’s Close. We
usually run 5km (3 miles) in a small group. Everyone welcome & if
enough people we can split into different groups for different
distances & speeds. Contact us via the Skelton Community Share

Skelton WI: 12th October. In the village hall at 7.30pm. The
speaker is Dan Shrimpton Rowntree Theatre: It's History and
Future. Guests most welcome, for further information please ring

Mobile Library in Skelton. The Mobile Library visits Skelton every
two weeks. Borrow books, update your library card or York Card,
return books from any other York library, & request books to be
brought to Skelton. The library stops in Fairfields Drive from
2:40pm to 3:10pm and Brecksfield from 3:15pm to 3:50pm.

Skelton Village Trust Speaker Evening Thursday 2nd November
7.30pm in the Village Hall. Speaker Eric Jackson. " Stand and
Deliver - the story of Highwaymen in the 17th and 18th
centuries" Tickets available from committee members and the

St Giles’ window repairs All the windows have now been repaired
and refurbished and they do look wonderful. Please visit the church
(open every day from 10:00 to 16:00) to look at them. Thank you to
The Benefact Trust, The Friends of St Giles, and to all who gave so
generously so that we could get these necessary repairs
completed.
St. Giles’ Church Harvest Collection for the York Food Bank.
There will be a box in church and the list of items needed at the
Food Bank throughout October. Please give generously, many
residents of York rely on donations to the Food Bank.

SHIPTON WITH OVERTON NEWS
Broadacres Housing Association will be hosting a public
consultation at the Community Centre on Thursday, 5th October
from 3pm until 6:30pm for anyone interested in finding out more
about the proposed affordable housing development on Station
Lane in Shipton.
Shipton by Beningbrough Parish Council Meetings are held in
person in the main room of the Community Centre at 7:30pm on
the fourth Thursday of the month. Members of the public are
welcome. The agenda is published online (https://

Council notice board (at the bus stop opposite the pub) at least 3

Shipton Space Café The waitress service at our Tuesday Café is
very popular. Come and see for yourself. There are the usual
delicious cakes and scones to go with the tea & filter coffee. We
will have ice cream and ice lollies during the warm weather. We
also play TABLE TENNIS and Darts. Just a short walk across the
football pitch is the NEW Shipton Wild Flower Woods – covered
with flowers now. CAFÉ at Shipton community hall is open every
Tuesday from 2 pm – 4.30 Tea / Coffee cakes and scones. Chat
and friendship.
Shipton Cinema is on every 1st Friday. Doors open at 7pm for

11am to 3pm daily.
Foodbank Collection: Items for the York Foodbank can be left inside
at the rear of the church during any of the daily opening hours of 11am
to 3pm. Groceries of all kinds are welcome, but no home-baked or
other fresh food please. We will ensure the items reach the Foodbank
as soon as possible. Thank you for helping those in need.
All Saints Shelf Indulgence Café - 10:30am on Saturday, 14th
October - Indulge in a coffee or choose from a selection of teas and
infusions with an included freshly-baked scone. Forward-buy a coffee
for a new resident or friend! Take home ‘off the shelf’ freshly-baked
cakes, scones or sweeties from our selection. Browse our shelves of
books for sale at bargain prices. Everyone welcome.
Friends of All Saints: 7:00pm, Thursday, 5th October - welcomes Jan
Jauncey to tell The Story of Montcony. Montcony, a tiny village in
Burgundy, home of defiant acts in 1942 which led to the forming of the
French Resistance in that area and its links with Linton on Ouse. Jan
will give us more background to the story.

on-Ouse Village Hall @ 1.00pm, This years show, Alice in
Wonderland, is brought to you by the professional touring company
North East Productions and we expect a hugely enjoyable production

Macmillan Coffee Morning is taking place on Saturday 7th October in
Newton Parish Hall from 10.30 till 12pm. Please come along & support

Poppies for Remembrance: With thanks to Little Bear and Bird
Florists in Haxby, All Saints Church will again host a large display of
poppies in early November. Each member of the community, including
children at Linton School, will be invited to provide a knitted, crochet,
painted or paper-crafted poppy to feature in the display (waterproof
paints only please). Poppies can also be sponsored for £1 each. All
proceeds will be divided between the Royal British Legion Poppy
Appeal and All Saints Church. Keep an eye on the church noticeboard
on Cherry Tree Avenue and on church and community social media for
all the details in the next few weeks, including patterns and drop-off
points for completed poppies. Everyone welcome to participate. Let’s
join together to make this a real community effort! Thank you.
Lullaby Service: Sunday, 8th October at 3pm. All Saints we will be
holding its annual Lullaby Service at the start of National Baby Loss
Awareness Week. The week sees churches and groups across the
country bring together parents and families who have lost a baby
before, during, or soon after childbirth. However, our service will mark
the light and joy brought to us by children of all ages that have been
lost, and commemorate them with thanksgiving. A candle may be lit by
each parent or family at the service and the name of the child read out
(with parents' permission). This short service of prayer,
commemoration and thanksgiving is open to all families who have
suffered loss, regardless of how long or short a time has elapsed since
then. Please come along to show them your support.
Gift Day 2023: Please join us at All Saints church for our annual
fundraiser on Saturday, 4th November, 10am—4pm. Refreshments,
bake sale, raffle and selection of stalls.
