Laboratory Exercise

Resistors
Objectives:

At the end of the exercise, the students should be able to:

 Identify the value of the color-coded resistors; and

 Identify the resistance of resistors in series, parallel, or both.

Materials:

 Breadboard
 8 pcs. assorted resistors, ¼ watt
 3 pcs. 1kΩ resistor, ¼ watt
 2 pcs. 470Ω resistor, ¼ watt
 2 pcs. 100Ω resistor, ¼ watt
 2 pcs. 2.7kΩ resistor, ¼ watt
 2 pcs. 50kΩ resistor, ¼ watt
 Digital multimeter

Basic Principles:

Resistors are basic elements that implement electrical resistance in a circuit. They implement resistance that divides
voltages and limits the current passing in a circuit. There are two (2) kinds of resistors: fixed and variable (adjustable).

There are different types of fixed resistors: carbon

composition, thick film, thin film, and wire wound.
Potentiometers, rheostats, and trimmers are examples
of a variable resistor.

Procedures:

1. From the assorted resistors in the table below, list at least five (5) of them in the table below. Also include the
computed range and measure each resistor using a digital multimeter. Compute the percent error of each
resistor.

2. From the figures below, form the following series-parallel circuits in a breadboard and try to compute and
measure their value. Find the percent error of combined resistor for each circuit as well.

Guide Questions:
1. What have you observed in series, parallel, and series-parallel resistors?
2. Why do you think resistors play a very important role in electronics?
3. How can you make the resistance of a resistor larger?
