by RUBÉN OSORIO
Introduction
The southern region of Chile, with the Chiloé archipelago, faces a
complex challenge between economic activity and the preservation of
the natural environment. In recent years, the fishing companies have
played a prominent role, especially from 2017 to 2021 (Eyzaguirre,
2021).
The collection and analysis of data underline the need for more sustainable and ethical approaches
in the management of fishing companies in Chiloé. The conservation of biodiversity, the
preservation of local cultural practices, and the mitigation of environmental impacts are crucial
aspects to ensure harmony between economic development and environmental protection in this
region.
Justification
Examining the environmental impact of fishing companies in Chiloé is crucial to address
issues of sustainability and conservation of natural resources. This analysis incorporates
an ethical and moral perspective, considering the business decisions that prioritize
economic gains over the potential ecological disaster faced by the island.
1 Preservation of Biodiversity
Chiloé harbors a unique and fragile biodiversity. The overexploitation of marine
resources jeopardizes the biological wealth of the archipelago, posing a severe
threat to its ecological balance (Sanchez, 2021).
Economic Impact and Sociocultural
Consequences
The expansion of fishing companies in Chiloé has brought both economic benefits and
sociocultural consequences to the region. While employment opportunities have increased, the
traditional way of life and cultural heritage of the local communities face challenges.
The arrival of migrant workers has altered the social fabric of the archipelago.
Environmental degradation and the loss of traditional livelihoods have disrupted the
community dynamics.
It is essential to carefully navigate the complexities of balancing economic growth with the
preservation of cultural traditions and social cohesion in Chiloé.
