A grimoire is a textbook of magic, typically including instructions on how to create

magical objects like talismans and amulets, how to perform magical spells, charms, and
divination, and how to summon or invoke supernatural entities such as angels, spirits,
and demons.
In many cases, the books themselves are believed to be imbued with magical powers,
though in many cultures, other sacred texts that are not grimoires have been believed
to have supernatural properties intrinsically.
This singular work contains curious formulas on Satanism magic, the art of evoking
demons and the domination of infernal forces. It contains the description of the most
famous demons and pentacles to evoke them.

c
In addition, the reputation of
this Grimoire was built up by
famed nineteenth century
French occultist ELIPHAS
LEVI, who, in his Histoire de
la Magie (History of Magic),
attributes this work to
Honorius II, 11th century
Antipope deposed by the
Council of Mantua for the
benefit of Alexander II,
describing it as horrible,
wicked, and profane:
"So [he] went back into the dark, and it is probable that he then wanted to be the high priest of
sorcerers and apostates; he may therefore have written, under the name of Honorius II, the grimoire
which bears his name. [...] At first glance, [the book] seems to be nothing but a tissue of revolting
absurdities; but for the initiated into the signs and secrets of the Kabbalah, he becomes a real monument
of human perversity; the devil is shown there as an instrument of power”.

The Grimoire du Pape Honorius amalgamates elements from other grimoires, such as
the Key of Solomon and the Grimorium Verum, with Catholic priestly ritual.

Regarding this Grimoire, STANISLAS DE GUAITA, the French poet based in Paris, expert
on esotericism and European mysticism, an active member of the ROSICRUCIAN
ORDER, renowned and celebrated occult books collector wrote:
francs, 75 francs, 55 francs etc ».
(Unobtainable, according to Eliphas Lévi, see his Clef
des Grands mystères or Key to the Great Mysteries,
which contains a detailed account of the stages of crime
and madness, in the soul of Verger, the priest who
murdered the Archbishop of Paris, Sibour. We read [in
that work] the long searches by this scoundrel to obtain
the Grimoire of Honorius, and the certificate of the
bookseller who sold him this book at the price of one
hundred francs. This was, (Eliphas said in 1860) the
current price of this work. Maybe the author wanted to
talk about the Editio Princeps? But, for his purpose,
Verger had nothing to do with the subtleties of a
bibliomaniac. And a textual reprint, (like the present,
Rome 1760) would have served his purposes, it seems,
as well.
Whatever they can see, the fact is that in the current
catalogues (1888) the Grimoire of Honorius varies
singularly in price: 6 francs, 12 francs, 32 francs, 75
francs, 55 francs etc.)

grimoires in his publishing press in Lille, giving them fictitious imprints - a common
practice with such occult books that "served the dual purpose of frustrating the censors
and giving the grimoires an aura of venerable authority and foreign mystery" (Davies,
p. 98).
