SECTION 4.10 VALVE ADJUSTMENT AND WEB DEFLECTION VALVE ADJUSTMENT CYLINDER HEAD SERIES PIN 205002 A CAUTION |!" 279 Precoaure where the rocker arms may have been removed or disturbed, the cylinder head replaced, or if it is suspected that the valves may have been adjusted incorrectly, do not rotate the crankshaft until all rocker arm adjusting screws and valve bridge adjusting screws have been backed off. Failure to back off the adjusting screws in these situations, may cause collision between valves and pistons, and severe engine damage. NOTE: All VHP Series Four engines use hydraulic valve liters. ‘This section describes the proper procedure to adjust the valve clearance on VHP Series Four cylinder engines with P/N 205002 series cylinder heads. The valves will be set in the order listed in Table 4,10-1, To compensate for slight differences in wear between the valves and valve seats, adjust the valve clearance every 3 months (2160 hours). Bi CAUTION | 5%" 2 engine down and allow it to cool for at least 1 hour before adjusting the valves. Disregard- ing this information could result in product damage and/or personal injury. 1. Remove spark plug cables from ignition coils. A. CAUTION |: 22 putt on cotts to lever valve cover off cyl- inder head. Pulling on coil could cause damage to equipment. NOTE: It is not required to remove the ignition coils from the valve covers in this procedure. NOTE: Prior toremaving valve covers, allow the engine ‘il to internally drain out of the cylinder heads into the crankcase. Remove the first valve cover slowly to see if the engine oil has fully drained from the cylinder heads. 2, Remove rocker arm cover capscrews and washers (our capscrews and washers per cover) (see Figure 4.10-1). \\— enrsenew (B= — WASHER Figure 4.10-1. Each piston must be brought into top dead center position, compression stroke. FORM 6296 Fst Edtion 40-7 VALVE ADJUSTMENT AND WEB DEFLECTION ‘Table 4.10-1. Valve Setting Order Justing screws are backed out too far, it may push the adjusting screw foot off the adjusting screw. NOTE: After an overhaul, or if matiple cylinder heads were removed, all the adjusting screws will have to be backed off prior to adjusting valves in order to ensure that there is no piston to valve contact. During normal periodic valve adjustment on an engine in service, the valves are adjusted, one cylinder head at atime, so only the adjusting screws on that cylinder head wil need to bbe backed off 4, If not already loosened, loosen lock nuts and back ‘out adjusting screws on valve bridge assemblies and rocker arms (see Figure 4.10-2), ‘SET VALVES ON | WHEN VALVES OVERLAP CYLINDER (ON MATING CYLINDER Column A Coluran B aR wR a it aR 2 2 at aR aR a aL mR IR : a ot VALVE BRIDGE 7 ze ASSEMBLIES Se 2 . Engine Barring Device To determine when this piston is at top dead center {compression stroke), watch rocker arms and valves on its mating cylinder (see Table 410-1 and Figure 4.10-4). As exhaust valves on mating cylinder are closing, intake valves begin to open. At this point, the mating cylinder is in valve overtap (all four valves Partially open). This means that all four valves on the first cylinder are fully closed. Verify there will be no valve and piston interference. 11. Verify rocker arm caver gasket surfaces are clean and completely free of grease and oll 12. Position rocker arm covers on cylinder heads with four washers and capscrews (oiled) per cover (see Figure 4.10-1). 13, Tighten rocker arm cover capscrews to 4.2 ft-lb (6.65 Nem) oiled, 14, Install spark plugs, spark plug extension, coils, and spark plug cables, CRANKSHAFT WEB DEFLECTION MEASUREMENT Check crankshaft web deflection when the engine is commissioned, annually, or when crankshaft bearings are replaced, or the engine mounting is disturbed Check the crankshaft web deflection by measuring crank web deflections with a dial gauge (PIN 494292), See Table 4.10-2 for points of measurement with the dial gauge. Electronic type gauges (PIN 494424) are also available When checking the crank web deflection, pay special attention to these points, ‘+ ‘The dial gauge must rest on the same point on all the cranks, There is a small milled recess on the inside of ‘each counterweight for this purpose. + Sothat comparisons are accurate, itis very important to take the measurements at the same engine temperature. A cold engine is one that is at normal room temperature; approximately 70° F (21° C). + When measuring, the crankshaft should always be rotated in a counterclockwise direction as viewed from the rear (flywheel) end NOTE: Start measurements at one end of the crank- shaft. Proceed along the length of the shaft to the ‘opposite end. Record the measurements NOTE: On spring isolated units, the spring isolators ‘should first be adjusted to ensure that all the isolators are bearing equal weight. Refer to the Installation ‘Manual, Form 1091, for procedures on how to adjust the ‘spring isolators. NOTE: Current production VHP Series Four engines are "punched" so the web deflection gauge can be positioned accurately. 1. Remove engine access covers from both sides of engine. 2. Install web deflection tool (PIN 494292) (spin gauge inposition to ensure tis fully seated) (see Table 4.10-2) 3. Position crankshaft so gauge hangs next to rod, but not touching 4, Zero gauge. NOTE: A crank throw that opens at the bottom is a positive reading. A crank throw that is closed at the ottam is a positive reading. 5, Slowly rotate crankshaft to #1 position and record positive or negative gauge reading (see Table 4.10-2) 6. Slowly rotate crankshaft to #2 position and record positive or negative reading 7. Slowly rotate crankshaft, stopping and recording dial readings for positions #3, #4 and #5, 8. Repeat procedure for each of crankshaft webs, 9. Correct crankshaft web deflection by adjusting ‘mounting foot height adjacent to deflected web. NOTE: Aweb whichis closed at the bottom is corrected by raising an outer mount (see Figure 4.10-7). Con- versely. a web which fs open atthe bottom is corrected by raising an inner mount or lowering an outer mount. After an adjustment, the deflection at the other crank- “shaft webs must again be measured. A total of 0.001 in. (0.0254 mm) deflection, from positive to negative, is allowable on all but the rear crankshaft throw. The rear throw may have as much as 0.0015 in. (0.0381 mm) deflection due to the effects of the flywheel weight. 10. Using jack screws to provide necessary clearance, Install shims as required at engine comer and center ‘mounting points. 11. Refer to Installation Manual, Form 1081, for addi- tional information on crankshaft web deflection, 12. Install engine access doors. w0-4 FORM 6296 Fest Eation
