The QNET Mechatronic Actuators incorporates the Hitec Servo motor model HS-311. The complete specification
sheet of the motor is available online at:
http://www.robotshop.com/media/files/pdf/hs311.pdf.
2.2.5 Solenoid
The QNET Mechatronic Actuators includes a 12 V push type solenoid that can be used to couple the brushed DC
motors. It is operated at a voltage of 10 V. The solenoid specifications are given in Table 2.6.
The solenoid that is used on the QNET Mechatronic Actuators is a Multicomp MCSMO-0630S12STD. Further
information can be found in the product data sheet, available online at:
http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/1490818.pdf.
2.2.6 Photomicrosensor
The QNET Mechatronic Actuators includes five transmissive photomicrosensor to measure the position of each
motor cogwheel. The photomicrosensor specifications are given in Table 2.6.
The photomicrosensor that is used on the QNET Mechatronic Actuators is a Omron Electronic Components LLC
model EE-SX1091. The complete specification sheet of the the photomicrosensor is available online at:
http://www.digikey.ca/product-search/en?KeyWords=OR627-ND.
Additionally, only one set of motors can be used at the time and their operation is indicated by their respective LEDs.
For all motors, a LED that is OFF indicates the motor is not active and a Green LED indicates that the particular
motor is currently active.
Furthermore, the brushed DC motors are fitted with an internal stall detection circuit that will trigger a stall warning
and subsequent stall error if the speed of either motor is below a threshold with respect to the amplifier command
to prevent permanent damage to the motors. For details on the stall detection of the brushed DC motor with linear
and PWM amplifier, see Table 2.3 and Table 2.4, respectively. The stall detection can be reset and the brushed DC
motor LED will switch to Green through the software interface or once a power cycle is performed.
Once the solenoid is activated, i.e. both DC motors are coupled, a stall error detected in either motor will shut off
both amplifiers. As long as the solenoid stays active, resetting either amplifier through the software interface will
reset both amplifiers.
Table 2.3: Status LED of the linear brush DC motors - Solenoid not active
Applied Duty Cycle Speed below threshold for Status LED Amplifier
−12.5 % . . . +12.5 % 1s 3s
TRUE ∗ ∗ Green Enabled
FALSE FALSE FALSE Green Enabled
FALSE TRUE FALSE Orange Enabled
FALSE TRUE TRUE Red Disabled
Table 2.4: Status LED of the PWM brush DC motors - Solenoid not active
The brushless DC motor is also fitted with an internal stall detection circuit that will trigger a stall warning and
subsequent stall error if the speed of the brushless DC motor is below a threshold with respect to the amplifier
command to prevent permanent damage to the motor. For details, refer to Table 2.5. Note that if all phases are set
to high impedance, the brushless DC motor LED will turn Orange to indicate that the control table is empty. The stall
detection can be reset and the brushless DC motor LED will switch to Green through the software interface or once
a power cycle is performed.
2.3 Environmental
The QNET Mechatronic Actuators is designed to function under the following environmental conditions:
• Standard rating
• Indoor use only
• Temperature 5 ◦C to 40 ◦C
• Altitude up to 2000 m
If the equipment is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer, the protection
provided by the equipment may be impaired.
Caution
2. QNET Mechatronic Actuators power supply (Condor P/N SA-242A71IV, Model ATS065-P241, Output 24 VDC,
2.71 A)
Use only the power supply provided with with the QNET Mechatronic Actuators.
Caution
3. Power cable (power supply cord set for use with the QNET Mechatronic Actuators power supply)
4. Schurter 0034.3121, 5 mm × 20 mm, 2.5 A, 250 VAC, time-lag fuse
ID# Description
1 NI ELVIS II
2 Prototyping board power switch
3 Power LED
4 Ready LED
5 Power Cable for NI ELVIS II
6 USB Connection between PC and NI ELVIS II
Do NOT make the following connections while power is supplied to the hardware!
Caution
1. Place the small opening on the front of the QNET Mechatronic Actuators board over the mounting bracket on
the NI ELVIS II.
2. Slide the PCI connector of the QNET Mechatronic Actuators module end into the female connector on the NI
ELVIS II. Make sure it is connected properly.
3. Connect the NI ELVIS II power cable.
9. Verify that the ELVIS +5V and External +24V LEDs on the QNET Mechatronic Actuators are lit green, and the
Status LED is red as shown in Figure 3.3. They indicate that the board has been properly connected to the NI
ELVIS II unit and that the QNET Mechatronic Actuators currently does not communicate with a PC.
Q2 When I open a QNET Mechatronic Actuators VI a message prompts that a VI with ”ELVIS” in the name cannot
be found?
The QNET Mechatronic Actuators VIs use the ELVISmx drivers. Make sure you install the contents of the NI
ELVIS II CD before attempting to open any of the QNET Mechatronic Actuators VIs (available for download at
www.ni.com).
Q2 On the QNET Mechatronic Actuators, the ELVIS +5V LED is bright green but the External +24V LED is not lit.
Ensure the QNET Mechatronic Actuators power jack on the QNET Mechatronic Actuators is connected with
the supplied QNET Mechatronic Actuators power cable. If the LED is still not lighting up, check the 2.5 A fuse of
the QNET Mechatronic Actuators next to the power jack. If it is burnt, replace it with an identical fuse (Schurter
0034.3121, 5 mm × 20 mm, 2.5 A, 250 VAC, time-lag fuse). To remove the fuse, push and turn the fuse holder
counter-clockwise.
Q3 The External +24V LED is bright green but the ELVIS +5V LED is not lit.
If the ELVIS +5V LED is not lit then the internal resettable fuse on the NI ELVIS II may have tripped. Try turning
off the Prototyping Board Power switch and turning it back on. If the ELVIS +5V LED still does not illuminate,
then the QNET Mechatronic Actuators may have an internal fault and will need to be returned for servicing.
(a) Go through the NI ELVIS II setup procedure outlined in the QNET Mechatronic Actuators Setup Guide
(b) Once completed, launch the Measurement & Automation Explorer software.
(c) As illustrated in Figure 4.1, expand the Devices and Interfaces and NI-DAQmx Devices items and select
the NI ELVIS II device.
(d) As shown in Figure 4.1, click on the Reset Device button.
(e) Once successfully reset, click on the Self-Test button.
(f) If the test passed, reset the NI ELVIS II (i.e. shut off the Prototyping Board switch and System Power
switch and turn them back on again). The Ready LED on the NI ELVIS II should now be lit.
