RSE3060 Rock Breakage

Practice Class 2, Semester 2, 2023

1. Place a rock specimen on a press and apply static pressure until failure occurs at 30 MPa (𝜎1 ). The
angle between the failure surface and the minimum principal stress is known to be 60°(𝜃), and assume
that the shear strength changes linearly with the normal stress
a) What is the shear strength on the surface with zero normal stress
b) Normal stress (𝜎𝑛 ) and Shear stress (𝜏𝑛 ) on failure surface
c) What is the shear strength on a plane 30°from the minimum principal stress acting surface
d) If it changes to dynamical loading, the dynamic and static loading rate are 102 MPa/s and
10−1MPa/s, please estimate the dynamic compressive strength (𝜎1𝑑 ) when the coefficient A is 1.

As known that the relationship between normal stress and principal stress in plane stress is:

1 1
𝜎𝑛 = (𝜎1 + 𝜎3 ) + (𝜎1 − 𝜎3 )𝑐𝑜𝑠2𝜃 − 𝜏𝑠𝑖𝑛2𝜃
2 2
2. Based on the elastic method, when the same normal load (P=109 N) is applied on the indenter, how
many times is the indentation depth of the conical indenter compared to the hemispherical indenter?
(R=0.2 m, 𝜃=45°, 𝜐=0.3, E=10 GPa)
