PROBLEM SET – II
Session : 2023-24 (Odd Sem.) Semester :I
Course : M.Tech. (Str. Engg.) Subject Code : MCE1012
Branch : CE Subject Name : Structural Dynamics
Group : MCE- SE-11R Name of Faculty Member :Mr. Mohd. Zain
Unit : II Topic Covered : Single Degree of
Freedom System

UNIT-II

1) What do you understand by the analytical model of the dynamic system?

2) Explain the concept of stiffness in case of dynamic systems.
3) Describe the concept of equivalent spring(stiffness) when springs are connected in:
a) Series
b) Parallel
4) What is single degree of freedom system (SDOF)?
5) Explain critical damping, under damping, and over damping in a damped vibrating SDOF system.
6) A single degree of freedom system of mass m and stiffness K is found to vibrate with a natural frequency of
12 Hz. If the stiffness is decreased by 1000N/m, the natural frequency is altered by 50 %. Determine mass and
stiffness for the original system.
7) A dynamic system has maximum velocity of 200 mm/sec and the natural period is 1 second. If the initial
displacement is 10 mm, determine the following:
a) Amplitude
b) Initial velocity
c) Maximum acceleration
8) Define damping. What are the main types of damping with respect to dynamic systems?
9) In an experiment to determine the damping characteristics of a system, a viscously damped mass of 2 kg
undergoes resonant amplitude of 1.4 m with a period of 0.25 second, when subjected to a harmonically
excited force of 245.25 N. Determine the damping coefficient.
10) A SDOF system consists of mass with weight 6 kN and spring with stiffness 5 N/mm. The system has the
damping force of 200N with a velocity of 250 m/s. Find out
a) Damping ratio
b) Damped frequency
c) Logarithmic decrement
d) Ratio of two consecutive amplitudes.
Supplementary Questions:
1) A machine of weight 80 kN is mounted centrally on a simply supported beam. It produces a harmonic force of
magnitude F= 140 kN at frequency 60 rad/sec. Neglect the weight of the beam and assume 15 % of critical
damping. Determine the amplitude of the motion of machine and the force transmitted to support. Given E= 2
× 105 N/mm2and I=30 × 106 mm4.
2) The stiffness and damping characteristics of a dynamic system are to be determined by a free vibration test. In
the test a mass of 18 kg is set into free vibration by displacing to 25 mm through a hydraulic jack and then
suddenly released. At the end of 20 complete cycles, the elapsed time is 3 second and the amplitude is 5 mm.
Determine the damping and the stiffness of the system.
