Course Objectives:

 To Introduce the approaches and mathematical models used in kinematic and dynamic analysis
of machinery.
 To give basic knowledge on kinematic and dynamic design of machinery.
 To give basic knowledge on cam desing.
 To give the basic knowledege of gears.
 To give the basic knowledege of Dynamic Balancing.

Course Description:

Degrees of freedom, Grashof law, Position analysis, Velocity analysis, Acceleration analysis, Cam
design, Kinematic of gears, Static and Dynamic balancing, Governors and Gyroscope.

Intended Learning Outcomes :


After studying this course the student should be able to:

1. Determine the kinematic chain and mobility, and perform the kinematic analysis of a given
mechanism.
2. Apply the fundamental principles of statics and dynamics to machinery.
3. Understand and avoid/suppress certain common dynamical problems a machine may undergo.
4. Understand the fundamentals of cams and gears.
5. Understand the fundamentals of machine design for desired kinematic or dynamic performance.

3 Inversions and graphical synthesis, measures of design quality


including transmission angles and coupler curves.
4 Position analysis.
5 Velocity analysis, Instant centers, mechanical advantage.
Instant Centers in complex mechanisms, instant centers in design
6 Acceleration analysis
7 Linkage analysis and design
8 Introduction to cams – terminology, pressure angles.
9 SVAJ diagrams, sizing a cam. (Design Project)
10 Cam performance equations.
11 Gears: Terminology, simple, compound gear trains.
12 Introduction to planetary gear trains
13 Gyroscopes and Governoers
14 Static and Dynamic balancing
