GRADE SIX LESSON

Teachers kindly allow the students to have their laptop. They must use this website to do this
Scientific investigation. Ask them to use headphones.

STEPS TO DO

1. Visit this website

2. Click onto the scientific method
3. As you watch the video write down the following steps involved in the scientific method.
a) Purpose of this investigation done by Miya

The purpose of this investigation done by Miya is to see which bird feeder hummingbirds are more
attracted too.

b) State the problem or question Miya planning to investigate

The question Miya is planning to investigate is “Why was the food in the red feeder gone first?”

c) Define hypothesis and state Miya’s hypothesis (if, then, because)

If the hummingbirds are eating out of the red feeder more, then the hummingbirds are more attracted
to red because hummingbirds can like the color red or be attracted to the color red.

d) Define experiment, define variable and explain Miya’s experiment(procedure) in your

own words.

Miya first hanged up four bird feeders (red, blue, yellow, and green) in the same area on a tree. Next,
she sits and watches which color feeder does the hummingbirds drink from. The variable of this
experiment is the period Miya gives the hummingbirds to drink from the bird feeders.

e) Draw this data column in your class notebook extent the data column and enter the
data chart from September 8 to September 13 as shown below
DATA COLUMN SHOWING THE FOOD INTAKE FROM EACH COLOURED FEEDER

 Do a graph (DRY MIX)

 Introducing control experiment

Miya’s controlled experiment could be how much food she put in each of the bird feeders.

 What was Miya’s conclusion?

Miya’s conclusion was that the hummingbirds will eat from the red feeder.

 Did it support Miya’s hypothesis?

Yes, Miya’s hypothesis supports the conclusion because the conclusion is that hummingbirds are more
attracted to the red feeder and her conclusion was that the hummingbirds are going to drink out of the
red feeder more than the other feeders.
