Assignment: ARITS Film Review

The movie of a raisin in the sun relates an experience to living of author Lorraine; so it
shows to behave historically of the society. If I produced the “a raisin in the sun” movie clip,
I started to show the first scene where family younger are talking about the insurance
money and showing what Walter wants to do with the money. Then, I show the compassion
that Lena brings to their children for each one fulfill their dream, when mama give money
a Walter for school to Beneatha and he invest rest of money. Also, including scenes the
suspense when Walter finds out that he lost money. Finally, Beneatha denies her brother,
and Lena mentions everybody is equal that we have the right to be wrong, and that no one
can believe better than others.

This movie is adapted to book “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry which it called
same play. This film debuted in 1961 directed by Daniel Petrie and starring Sidney Poitier,
Ruby Dee, Claudia McNeil, Diana Sands, Roy Glenn, and Louis Gossett Jr. The Music was
produced by Laurence Rosenthal and the Cinematography was Charles Lawton Jr. Finally, it
was edited by William A. Lyon and Paul Weatherwax and distributed by Columbia Pictures.
Particularly, I found this movie to Budget $1.5 million; and it has running time in 128
minutes. The film follows a black family that wants a better quality of life but it is
discriminated to be black. The most significant theme of this movie is that it shows the
value and purpose of dreams, and the importance of family.

A continuation I related the plot of the movie, so you can appreciate more detail what
happen in the movie. In the exposition, “a raisin in the Sun” film shows a younger family of
five lives in a tiny apartment where they share bathroom with other tenants on Chicago,
the time is close 1945 because the movie is filmed white and black. The first acting is Ruby
Dee performing the role of Ruth the Walter's wife, where she wake up Stephen Perry
(interpreting to Travis son of Walter and Ruth) and Sidney Poitier (represent to Walter).
Then, present of the family eagerly awaits a ten thousand dollar life insurance check for the
death of big Walter. Mama's husband and the family's patriarch, Walter Lee younger a
dissatisfied driver that wants to invest in liquor store. Walter mentions finances invest with
his wife Ruth and Beneatha (Walters younger sister) both recognize momma as the one in
charge of the insurance money. Then, Walter meets William and Bobo to speak the
investment in a bar.

In the rising action, it begins Walter tries to convince her to finance his investment but
Mama's against selling liquor, she wants to support Beneatha's education. Also, she dreams
about buying a house. The family encourages Beneatha to pursue her wealthy suitor George
but Beneatha finds him shallow another suitor Nigerian classmate called Asaiga, a guy
helps Beneatha explore her African heritage. When the check arrives, Ruth discovers that
she is pregnant with an unplanned child and she has scheduled an abortion.

In the climax, mama uses part of the settlement money to make a down payment on a
house Ruth is at first overjoyed but then shocked to learn the houses in Clybourn Park a
white neighborhood. Walter stops going to work disappointed and starts drinking. Mom
spots him depressed, she decides to look for him at the bar, and she gives the money of
father’s insurance, with the condition reserve three thousand for Beneatha's plan to attend
medical school and the rest of the money his control. Walter changes immediate and Ruth
decides to keep her baby. While the youngers excitedly pack, they received Carl Lindner a
white representative of the Clybourn Park welcoming committee. Lindner says he wants to
start a dialogue but it is soon clear the neighborhood residents want to buy back the house
to prevent integration. Walter, Ruth and Beneatha angrily reject the offer and ask Lindner
to leave soon. After receiving to investor Bobo, he reports that Willy has skipped town with
their investment money, and Walters share enraged he invested whole money since
Beneatha education's saving. Mama reacted enraged and frustrated. Now, the family need
of cash consider staying in the apartment. An upbeat hopeful Asagai guy debates the
possibility of progress with Beneatha, asking her to move with him to Africa to work with
him to help improve the lives of his people. Desperate Walter calls Carl Lindner to see the
offer, due to actions Beneatha to disown her brother but mama insists Walter needs their
love now more than ever. The most memorable scene, when mama tells Travis stay that his
father teaches him a lesson of life. Immediately, Walter instead tells Lidner they plan to
move into the house.
In my opinion, Diana Sands in his chaterization as Benatha highlights his performance
because she illustrates his scenes with African music and culture although she never cuts
her hair like in the book. According to the costumes, it shows in the film are consistent with
the scene, giving eye-catching. Asagai's gift to Beneatha is a detail that captures the
audience, showing the heritage importance. Travis's gift to mom is also significant because
it represents the important of the family, and the acceptance of mama move me.

In conclusion, I recommend this movie, because it shows a historical event where many
people were discriminated against for being black. In brief, I think it is important to
cultivate and teach so that in the future this does not happen again. I like the values that
this movie shows, the value of family and the pursuit of our dreams.

To end, I like more film than book because I liked seeing the experiences and reactions of
the characters as well as the adaptation of new scenario. For example, the bar and the new
house are not mentioned in the book. However, the participation of Johnson was removed
of the movie.
