What is Life???
-Life is a characteristic that distinguishes physical
entities with biological processes.
-Life is defined as any system capable of performing
functions such as eating, metabolizing, excreting,
breathing, moving, growing, responding to external
stimuli and REPRODUCING
For Example, Plants, humans and animals

What is
Reproduction?
-Reproduction is the biological
process by which new
individuals of the same species
produced either by a single
parent or two parents.

"Reproduce"

Perpetuation of Life Page 8 of 56

What is the meaning of
reproduce?
-produce new individuals of the same
kind by sexual or asexual process.
-to make more, either by having babies
or creating copies. When human,
animals and plants make more of their
own kind, they reproduce.

-There is no gamete formation
or fertilization Reproduction is the

production of

Asexual Reproduction
Simple organisms reproduce through asexual
Reproduction. offspring come from a single parent and
has the exact copy of the genes hence referred as "clone"

Perpetuation of Life Page 15 of 56

Types of Asexual reproduction

Fission
Fragmentation
Budding
Parthenogenesis

Perpetuation of Life Page 16 of 56

BINARY FISSION
-separation of the parent cell into two new daughter cells.
This process happens with the division and duplication of
the parents genetic matter into Two parts. Here, each
daughter cell receive one copy of its parent DNA.

FRAGMENTATION
-a type of Reproduction or cloning
where one organism is divided into
minor fragments. Once divided , these
fragments develop into individual
ones which are fully grown.

Exhibited by many organisms such as fungi,

cyanobacteria, many plants, flat worms, and sea
stars.

BUDDING
-A new organism is developed from a small part of the parents body.
-A bud which is formed detaches to develop into a new organism. The newly
developed organism remains attached as it grows further. It is separated
from the parent organism when it gets matured by leaving scar tissues
behind.

PARTHENOGENESIS
-It is a form of asexual reproduction by self-impregnation resulting in the
production of a zygote from an unfertilized egg. Thus, It is also referred to by
many as "virgin birth".

Sexual Reproduction

Perpetuation of Life Page 31 of 56

Sexual Reproduction
The perpetuation of a new organism form two
organism with use gametes.

In this process male gametes which is the sperm cell

fuses with a fenale gamete known as the egg cell to
form a diploid cell called zygote containing two sets
of chromosomes.

During sexual reproduction the genetic material

contained in their chromosomes combine to produce
genetically diverse offspring that is different from
both parents.

Perpetuation of Life Page 32 of 56

External Fertilization
The union of egg and
sperm occurs outside
the female reproductive
tract.

Perpetuation of Life Page 33 of 56

Internal Fertilization
The union of an egg and spermcell during sexual
Reproduction inside the female body. Internal
Fertilization brings more control to the female with
Reproduction .
