Safety considerations
Ensure that the syringe is supported firmly upside down by the clamp and stand. Ensure that the loop of string
is tied securely round the handle of the syringe before the start of the experiment. Learners will hang 1 kg onto
the string attached to the plunger. Firmly support the outside of the syringe so it does not fall down.

The results in Table 12.2 give an idea of the results learners should produce in the investigation.

Duration
The planning investigation will take about 40 minutes.
Variables
Learners should identify:
• dependent variable: mass of water m that turns to steam
• independent variable: power of heater P or V and I
• variables to be controlled: time of heating t, same resistor (or heater), and any variable that may affect the
heat loss (for example, the surface area, thickness of the cup, draughts or, alternatively, the amount of the
heater that is exposed to the air).
Safety considerations
• If any practical work is carried out, then handling of boiling water must be done safely, with the cup held
and transported safely, and low voltages must be used.
• Gloves may be used to handle the cup or any other sensible safety precaution suggested.

Method
A suggested method is as follows.
1 Set up the apparatus as shown in Figure 12.3. Turn on the heater and wait until the water is boiling steadily.

2 Start the stopwatch and, at the same instant, record the reading on the top-pan balance.
3 Record the readings on the ammeter and voltmeter regularly as the water boils.
4 After 5 minutes record the new reading on the top-pan balance.
5 Top up the cup until there is the same initial level of water in the cup. Repeat the procedure above.
6 Change the voltage supplied by the power supply. Repeat the procedure above.
Extra detail, for example:
• adjust variable power supply / variable resistor to ensure potential difference / current is constant
• more detail about how to keep heat loss constant, e.g. add insulation to sides of beaker
• use long time to reduce percentage uncertainty
• relationship is valid if the graph is a straight line through the origin with a negative intercept or zero
intercept if H is negligible.
