Architectural elements
The Hemadpanti architecture is a notable architectural style that emphasizes the importance
of Center of mass in the construction of every element. Unlike other architectural styles, in
Hemadpanti architecture, no element is glued together using adhesives such as Chuna or
Cement. Instead, each element is precisely placed and balanced to maintain structural integrity
without the need for adhesives. This technique highlights the mastery of ancient Indian architects
who possessed a deep understanding of the principles of physics and engineering. This building
style was formed during the 13th Century in Maharashtra, and incorporated black stone
and limestone, which were readily available. It also got the status of World Heritage Site.
Typical features are: -

1. Small in scale,
2. Edifice built from grey black talc chlorite schist soap stone
3. Temple - built without any binding between the stones which have been
cut to specific shape,
4. Maintains cool interiors even when temperatures outside are scorching.
5. A pillared Nandi mantapa, at the centre
6. Mandapa having balustrade entrances on three sides, held aloft by four
ornamented pillars. The columns carry deftly sculpted symbol of the
Kadamba rulers - figurine of elephant trampling a horse - on their base.
7. A solid piece of stonework in the shape of a lotus adorns the ceiling of the
Mandapa.
8. Antarala and Garba griha of the temple bear resemblance to the
Kalleshwara Temple at Balambi in Dharwad, and the Jain temple at Belagavi.
9. And perforated stone lattice screen s seen decorating the main entrance of
the sanctum sanctorum and is suggestive of the strong influence of
Hoysala art. The sanctum houses a linga.
10. Exquisitely carved bas reliefs of the trinity of gods, Brahma, Vishnu and
Shiva, with their respective consorts
11. Plain grey sloping slab roof is a unique aspect of the temple that faces east
and therefore has the first rays of the rising sun fall on the deity in the
sanctum. (As commonly found in many temples)
