On January 17, 1995, the Great Hanshin Earthquake, popularly known as the Kobe Earthquake, occurred.
The Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate's shared border is where tectonic plates moved, causing
the earthquake.
Seismometers, which detect the ground's vibrations brought on by seismic waves, are one type of device
used by scientists to track earthquakes.
The northern region of Awaji Island, which is roughly 20 kilometers from the city of Kobe, is where the
Kobe earthquake's epicenter was situated.
nearly 6,000 individuals lost their lives and nearly 40,000 were injured as a result of the earthquake's
extensive damage. In the impacted areas, it also seriously damaged the infrastructure, transportation,
and building stock.
Numerous factors contributed to the massive devastation brought on by the earthquake, including the
strength and duration of the shaking, the location of the epicenter, the kind of soil and building materials
utilized in the affected districts, and the lack of readiness and response on the part of the government.
After watching the video, one can learn the importance of earthquake preparedness and response, the
need for proper building codes and construction practices in earthquake-prone areas, and the role of
technology and science in monitoring and predicting earthquakes to minimize their impact.
