NATIONAL LEVEL HISTORY - CULTURAL RELEASE: NOC NANG

Located in hamlet 4, Phong Thanh A commune, Gia Rai town, Bac Lieu province,
Noc Nang historical site was recognized by the Ministry of Culture and
Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Information, and Tourism) as a History -
Culture relic at the national level on August 30, 1991, known as the place that
marked history full of blood and tears, due to the tenacious struggle of the great
peasant family Muoi Chuc in 1928, caused a great resonance throughout the Gia
Rai region of Bac Lieu, created a strong wave of public opinion condemning the
barbaric and brutal colonial landlords at that time.

The main grate of Noc Nang national level history-cultural release.

Noc Nang, those two words had become a place name because the water here was
deep in the past. If you wanted to build a house, you had to shock the venom, on
the top of the venom there is a crutch to make a tree line to lie on.
Many passersby saw that the house was damaged, and only the tree was left alone,
so the locals called this place Noc Nang hamlet.
In the early 1900s of the last century, Huong Chinh Nguyen Thanh Luong was left
by his father with 73ha of reclaimed land in the forest at Noc Nang canal. In 1912,
Huong Chanh Luong had an application to measure - grant a contract for the entire
area of 73ha and was approved by Bac Lieu provincial president, including a map
of the land. After that, his son Nguyen Van Toai (also known as Bien Toai)
continued to inherit the land when he died.

In 1917, Bang Tac, a notoriously rich overseas Chinese in Bac Lieu used tricks to
appropriate the land of Bien Toai's family. The land dispute between the two
parties broke out and through many trials, Bien Toai's family lost the lawsuit
because Bang Tac used the money to bribe the authorities.
After that, Bang Tac sold this land to the government. Paradoxically, the new
owner forced the Bien Toai brothers to pay rent on their land.
Tragedy culminated in 1928 in Noc Nang field of Phong Thanh village, that the
peasant family Muoi Chuc uprising against the colonial government and its
henchmen. The landowner Ma Ngan and Phu Huan used a lot of cunning tricks to
help steal rice and land from Muoi Chuc’s family.

The clash happened between two groups, the Muoi Chuc brothers who used spears
and sticks to fight against the landlords and the French colonial government led by
two persons that were Co Tournier and Bauzou, and deputy manager Danh Long
commanded evil soldiers, secret soldiers, Huong, Hoi te of Phong Thanh village
took place very fiercely at Muoi Chuc rice field on the morning of February 16,
1928. Four people five lives (Mrs. Nghia, Muoi Chuc’s wife was 7 months
pregnant) the price was too expensive for the act of killing the Western soldiers to
keep own land of the Muoi Chuc family. The French colonial government, Co
Tournier died, and others were injured.
The cluster of statues re-enacts the bloody decisive battle of the Muoi Chuc
farmer’s family in 1982

At that time, Noc Nang was an attractive headline in La tribune Indochinois

newspaper (Indochina Forum), Cong Luan newspaper, and Dong Phap Times
newspaper… newspapers raced to denounce the colonialists and evil landlords to
protect the poor farmer as Muoi Chuc family.
On August 17, 1928, the Can Tho High Court tried the Noc Nang case, two French
lawyers, Tricon and Jevaco, defended Mr. Tai's brothers without any fee, but in
front of the horseshoe, Mr. Tai's brothers were accused of: "rebellious stick, anti-
government, murder"
Mr. Tai's family continued to file complaints and the press also strongly
condemned, forced the French government to issue Decree No. 2315 CB dated
May 28, 1932, and granted a return of 50.40 hectares to Mr. Tai's family.
The Noc nang event in 1928 is proof, that proved the oppressive and exploitative
nature of the colonists and the henchmen. That was causing anger in the hearts of
the people of Cochinchina, the Vietnamese journalists, and the discontent of the
progressive French.

To record the event, the unrelenting feats of the Noc Nang farmers, the Party
Committee, authorities, and the people of Bac Lieu province built Noc Nang
historical relic site right at the place where the bloody war had taken place in the
past, which was included many construction items such as the rice drying yard and
the tomb of Mr. and Ms. Tam Luong (Mr. Muoi Chuc's parents) and his brothers,
which were separated about 300m. Mr. and Ms. Tam Luong's graves were built by
Muoi Chuc's brothers after they died. After the Noc Nang event, those massacred
were scattered nearby. By 1963, all the graves were gathered in the same area.

In 2008, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the incident at Noc Nang field,
the Gia Rai Party Committee district (now Gia Rai town) restored and expanded
the relic. The project was inaugurated on February 16, 2008. This relic has an area
of more than 3,000m2, including restoration and expansion items: the Muoi Chuc
family tomb area, an exhibition house, and a cluster of statues re-enacting the
battle between the Muoi Chuc family and Westerners stealing rice, with a total
investment of over 8 billion VND.

Every year, on the 9th date of the Lunar New Year, the people of Gia Rai town
hold a very solemn festival that was "Imprint of Dong Nuc Nang" Festival with
dignified ritual, in memory of a generation of forefathers who were loyal, bravely
stood up to protect rice seeds and fields for today's Gia Rai agricultural land to
develop the process of building new countryside. The annual festival "Imprint of
Dong Nuc Nang" attracts hundreds of visitors, coming here on this occasion of the
festival seem to find their roots, light incense to express their sincere gratitude, and
pay tribute to their ancestors. the spirit of indomitable struggle before the birth of
the Party shook the whole continent of Cochinchina.

In addition, when coming to the Noc Nang historical site, visitors will be able to
visit and listen to the explanation of the legend here, deeply understand the Noc
Nang field that has soaked in the blood and tears of the people, how that fiery duel
turned this land into a tragic legend? The graves are buried next to each other, the
green grass cannot cover the silence that the ancients still hide.
Nowadays, Noc nang people have owned their land, their fields, which are season
after season, crop after crop, and the rice fields are flooded all year.
However, there are still traces of those who used to take the land of the peasants
with their power.

As for the people for nearly a century lying in that land, always living in their
homeland, Nguyen Van Chuc, the farmer Muoi Chuc, his resilient standing is
forever shining with the same name as the Noc Nang field, Nguyen Thi Trong or
Ms. Ut Trong, her brave followed with the wind that spread throughout this land.
Aims for the next young generations to be forever proud of the tragic song, the
innocent and heroic people.
