EPISODE 1

1. From the PPSTs, the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Standards

and the TEDx videos that you viewed, what competencies does a great
teacher possess?

Based on the four career stages of teachers of the Philippine Professional Standards
for Teachers (PPSTs), great teachers never stop learning. After obtaining the
certificate to become a professional teacher, the next step is to develop into a highly
qualified teacher. Whereas, according to the frameworks provided by the Southeast
Asia Teachers Competency Standards, a great teacher knows and understands what to
teach, assists students in learning, engages in community service, and strives to
become a better teacher every day. Engaging in the teaching profession entails taking
on a larger role that extends beyond the classroom. According to the video I watched,
great teachers have a thorough understanding of their students. Indeed they are a
listener which is a skill needed to transform schools and education. Additionally, great
teachers has a power to bring out the best version of their students. They have this
deep understanding and they can see beyond despite of the struggles that their
students are facing. They lead every students in the way where they can see their
value, destiny and purpose that can have full impact to their future choices.

2. Are these competencies limited only to professional teachers?

No, the skills I stated above are not only limited to professional competencies. To
succeed in teaching and learning, teachers must also have certain personal qualities.
Given that students depend on what their teachers are teaching them, it is crucial to
impart correct knowledge to them. On the other hand, a teacher's character traits are
very important for fostering better relationships in the classroom and in the larger
community to which they belong. In a classroom with diverse backgrounds and skill
levels, it's very important that a teacher strives to understand each of their students to
the best of their abilities and support them along in their journey.

3. For a teacher to be great is it enough to possess the professional

competencies to plan a lesson, execute a lesson plan, manage a class,
assess learning, compute and report grades? Explain your answer.

From my perspective, professional competencies are not enough for a teacher to be

called great. Planning a lesson, executing a lesson plan, managing a class. assessing
learning, computing and reporting grades are part of a teacher's job and by doing this
task only means he was doing his job. A great teacher must also possess personal
qualities such as being a good listener which is very important characteristic because
a teacher will only be able to support and encourage their students to advance if they
have a strong understanding of who they are and where they are in their academic
journey. It is important to listen for what students are interested in so the teacher can
tailor lessons to their interest areas, how they describe any challenges or obstacles so
the teacher can be supportive, and how they interact with other students and in the
classroom. Listening can also be important to understand cultural differences and this
is just one example of a personal quality that is essential to understand one's students
and to support them in their academic journey.
4. For a teacher to be great, which is more important – personal qualities or
professional competencies?

They are both equally important. A teacher with expertise who cannot communicate
is useless. A skilled communicator who lacks knowledge of the subject is also
useless. Both the professional and the personal traits are equally essential for a
teacher. In my opinion, a teacher cannot be considered as great without either one of
them. In order for a teacher to understand the needs of the students and for the
students to feel comfortable approaching the teacher, certain personal attributes, such
as effective communication and interpersonal skills, are necessary. Professional
abilities are required to learn the fundamentals of teaching methods, tactics, and
hands-on training to handle all types of learners from every section of society and
also to give certification for teaching. In addition to this, a teacher must have a
reliable knowledge of their subjects and keep it updated for an effective teaching and
learning.

5. Who are the teachers that we remember most?

In reality, the majority of us remember being transformed rather than being taught.
This aspect was discussed in the TED movie that I watched. We remember the
teachers who over the years helped us grow and transform, not simply a single lesson
in a classroom. Even though each teacher has a unique teaching style, passions, and
life experiences, exceptional teachers all have one thing in common: they are
deliberate about the influence they want to have on their students. These teachers have
a long-term vision and don't get caught up in the small day-to-day stuff. They accept
their students for who they are, and help them see their purpose of who they could
become when they leave school.
Which personal traits do I possess? Not possess? Where do I need improvement
in?

In terms of personal qualities, I exhibit patience and approachability. It is often

said that "patience is a virtue," and this couldn't be more true for teachers. Working
with youngsters can be challenging, so being approachable is essential in order to
establish effective communication and foster a positive learning environment.
Additionally, I am enthusiastic and adaptable, as I thoroughly love to be a teacher and
everything that it entails. Demonstrating enthusiasm in the classroom can inspire
students to engage more actively in their education and apply themselves to their
studies. Furthermore, I possess good listening skills, empathy, and discipline. These
traits enable me to connect with my students on a deeper level, understand their needs
and concerns, and maintain a structured and focused learning environment. However,
I am aware that there are areas for improvement, such as enhancing my
communication skills. Effective communication is crucial when interacting with
parents to discuss their children's progress and address any concerns or issues.

Which professional competencies am I strongly capable of demonstrating?

I am capable of creating a safe learning environment that is conducive to

learning. I knew that I can also be good at lesson plan design. I have the knowledge
on how to choose and create instructional materials to accommodate students at
different levels. This follows my knowledge of using varied teaching strategies to
help my students with multiple learning styles learn and stay engaged. I know that I
can also be able to assess and identify my students' needs. I can also collaborate with
others so we can learn from one another and grow into better teachers to make the
school a safe, effective learning environment for all students and to improve the
overall image of the school and the instruction that takes place there.

In which competencies do I need to develop more?

My technical and digital skills are the competencies that I need to develop more
because as we know due to modernization one must be settle with the knowledge we
had to provide a better instruction for the learners. Children of today have been
surrounded by digital technology and this skills as well are essential nowadays. I
should undergo an extensive digital transformation to be able to meet the needs of the
young generation and their digitalized future. That's why I need to enhance my
knowledge and skills in this competencies.

Who are the teachers that we remember most?

We don't forget teachers who instill in us the understanding that good things
take time, and therefore, we must work diligently to achieve them. Teachers who also
remind us that life can be challenging, and it will always present obstacles that require
resilience. Someone who will taught you that a beautiful face is not enough so you
also need a beautiful mind. A teacher that will never leave hopeless and weak students
behind, even when others may dismiss them as incapable of learning. They
consistently emphasize that grades do not define our intelligence and that the true test
starts when you graduate. Their ability to inspire and their effortless coolness make
them truly remarkable individuals. They will remind you that it is okay to fail as long
as you're willing to get up again. A teacher who will make an impact to his/her
students to always pursue his dreams and know his purpose as an individual.

1. OBSERVE
In assisting my Resource Teacher, I observed that personal traits such
as enthusiasm, physical touch, and positive attitude; and professional
competencies like technical skill, communication delivery and creativity were
least/not displayed and as a result, the level of student engagement in the
classroom was found to be relatively low. Limited eye contact with students
further contributed to this issue, as it hindered the establishment of a strong
teacher-student connection. Although the pace of the lessons was quick, there
was a lack of encouragement for students to actively engage with the topics or
express their thoughts and concerns. This resulted in reduced satisfaction and
motivation among the students. One major contributing factor to this problem
was the teacher's lack of creativity in their teaching methods and approaches.

2. REFLECT
The lack of these personal traits and professional competencies
(mentioned in #1) may be caused by some of the problems they face, as well
as a lack of resources and support. Today, technology is a major factor
affecting education. Schools are expected to use it to improve the education of
their students. The things I have identified as the main barriers to its
successful use are factors external to teachers in terms of equipment, resources
and training, as well as internal factors such as attitudes and beliefs,
confidence and skills.

3. PLAN
I would like to address this problem (mentioned in #2)
by conducting an action research on by conducting an action research on different
factors that influence technology integration in educational context.

4. ACT
a. The main objective of my action research is outline the current thinking
on the role of technology in today’s education.

b. My specific research questions are:

1. What are the benefits and drawbacks of integrating technology in education?
3 What are the impacts of technology on student learning outcomes?
4 What are the factors influencing successful implementation of technology in
education?

c. To answer my specific research questions, I will gather data through survey,

review of literature and analysis.
As future teachers, it is crucial for us to be constantly reminded of the personal
qualities and professional competencies that we should possess. While knowledge and
skills are important, being a great teacher goes beyond that, as one's traits and
characteristics also play a significant role in striving to excel in this profession.
Teachers should provide opportunities for students to engage in group projects and
activities that require cooperation and coordination. By doing so, students can develop
essential skills such as effective communication, active listening, conflict resolution,
and empathy towards their peers.

Being a great teacher requires more than just possessing knowledge and skills.
Personal qualities and professional competencies play a crucial role in shaping
effective educators. Teachers must adapt to the changing landscape of education by
equipping students with skills such as collaborative teamwork, decision-making, time
management, active listening, and effective communication. By focusing on these
aspects, teachers can empower students to thrive in an ever-evolving world. Great
teachers are remembered. They are the kind of teachers that will leave an imprint of
himself or himself on his/her students. These exceptional teachers possess a unique
set of qualities that empower their students to reach for their dreams and see beyond
their current circumstances. Their impact on students' lives is invaluable, as they
inspire and guide them to become the best versions of themselves. To be able to
transform schools and education, great teachers are in need.

Reflecting on all that I have learned in this episode, I am committed to striving

towards becoming a great teacher in the future. I will endeavor to cultivate not only a
great mind but also a compassionate heart that is considerate of the needs and interests
of my future students. I will open my mind to possibilities of imparting this valuable
information and skills I have, open my ears to listen in the struggles in class, open my
eyes to see their capabilities and open my mouth to remind them of their calling. My
commitment is to be fully present and engaged in the process of sharing knowledge,
understanding the struggles faced by my future students so I can empathize with their
challenges and provide appropriate support, recognizing their capabilities, and
providing guidance to help them fulfill their purpose.
